Jerusalem rabbis 'condemn dog to death by stoning'
A Jewish rabbinical court condemned to death by stoning a stray dog it feared was the reincarnation of a lawyer who insulted its judges, reports say.
The dog entered the Jerusalem financial court several weeks ago and would not leave, reports Israeli website Ynet.
It reminded a judge of a curse passed on a now deceased secular lawyer about 20 years ago, when judges bid his spirit to enter the body of a dog.
The animal is said to have escaped before the sentence was carried out.
One of the judges at the court in the city's ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighbourhood had reportedly asked local children to carry out the sentence.
An animal welfare organisation filed a complaint with the police against a court official, who denied reports that judges had ordered the dog's stoning, according to Ynet.
But a court manager told Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot the stoning had been ordered as "as an appropriate way to 'get back at' the spirit which entered the poor dog", according to Ynet.
Dogs are often considered impure animals in traditional Judaism.

Is belief in re-incarnation a part of the Jewish religion?
That's news to me....

It makes no sense to me. Dogs are generally nice and the majority of lawyers are inclined toward asshole - IMHO, that is.
I never knew orthodox Jews considered dogs to be unclean. Poor orthodox Jew kids.

The lawyers that come back as dogs are the ones that shit on the sidewalk.

I'm sorry if this sounds "culturally insensitive", but that's just sick. An authority figure encouraging children to kill a defenseless animal in this cruel and barbarous way. Disgusting.

Which begs the question:
Is it the dog's fault or the mouth-piece who was walking Fido?
-or-
If one was a canine, would said canine wanted to reincarnate as an attorney?
Inqiring doggie minds, wish to know.

Well, Jews don't believe in Hell, but if you're not worthy of Heaven, then one of the punishments is coming back to this life.
Makes you wonder why so many Jews decide to become lawyers? The Bar gets you barred, with a curse to be a cur.

Not to defend the religious kooks of Meah Shearim (the home of a notoriously rabid fringe sect), but the OP is a re-write of a re-write of a second-hand account from a website run by Yediot Aharanot, which is sort of the Israeli equivalent of the Daily Mail or New York Post. Yes, we Yids have our odd fundamentalist nutters, too, which causes no end of problems in a supposedly democratic but also Jewish state. But there is quite frankly a lot less here than meets the eye.
Some brief observations:
1) Dogs are "impure animals" in that they feed on carrion in the wild, and we do not eat them; many Middle Eastern cultures (particularly the Arabs and Persians) revile dogs. However, the Judaism that I grew up with taught that dogs held a special place in our culture, since it is said that the dogs of Egypt did not bark as we fled captivity, and we are to return this kindness forever. I grew up with dogs as pets, and I share my home with a dog today. I now live in a heavily Orthodox neighborhood (not on purpose!), and a number of my neighbors have dogs as well.
2) Reincarnation is no part of Judaism. Not in any sect. Even among the kooks.
3) According to the original account, the rabbi did not order local children to kill the dog, but attempted to enlist their help in getting the dog to leave the building by suggesting that they might throw stones at it.
4) As a general rule Jews don't believe in Hell; moreover, the whole "Heaven" concept is at best sketchy, but is not seen as a reward for either faith or works, and is not something we actually give much if any thought to, as it's kind of pointless. The focus of nearly all Jewish sects (certainly the three or four dominant branches) is the concept of tikkun olam, i.e., "repairing the world," in order to improve the quality of life for all here and now. The greatest "punishment" I could imagine in death would be to not be remembered as having worked to pursue justice, comfort the afflicted and leave the world a better place than I found it.

BTW, I notice Auntie Beeb is now "updating" the story with sonething of a retraction:
BBC wrote:Update 20 June 2011: This report was based on sources usually regarded by the BBC as reliable. In the light of categorical denials by rabbinical court officials, an update to this report has been published.
(link in the link at the OP.)

Oh now that's just lovely....
The BBC leaves the original report exactly as it was, and you have to read through the whole story to find the link to the retraction at the bottom....

That's akin to the effect of a written retraction in the print edition, no? I think they should be credited for not cleansing their online version; they've left it so future readers can see the story they posted without proper fact checking. Perhaps the caveat should precede the article as a headnote, however.

Ask Rabbi Simmons: Reincarnation
There are many Jewish sources dealing with what is popularly
called "reincarnation." In Hebrew, it is called "gilgul
ha'ne'shamot," literally the recycling or transmigration of
souls.
