I'm sorry, but if mentioning that a black person is black is now "racist", then stop the world I want to get off.Tiger Woods’ former caddie has caused another sensation, this time by using a racial slur to disparage his old boss during a caddies awards dinner in Shanghai.
Steve Williams received a mock award on Friday night for ‘‘celebration of the year’’ for his TV interview after Adam Scott won the Bridgestone Invitational.
That was the day Williams said it was ‘‘the best win of his life’’, despite being on the bag with Woods for 13 majors.
At an awards party filled with banter, Williams said of his interview: ‘‘It was my aim to shove it right up that black arsehole.’’
That line drew the biggest reaction at a party attended by several players, caddies, officials and some media.
There was a mixture of laughter and shock, with some players turning to each other with eyes widened and jaws agape.
The provision of the party is that all comments are off the record, yet several caddies couldn’t stop talking about it long after it was over.
Approached early the next morning at breakfast, Williams was stunned to learn that British tabloids had gone with the story.
‘‘Why would they do that?’’ he said. ‘‘The whole thing was meant to be fun.’’

Unecessary, maybe. Racist? No.

Re: I fail to see the racism.
While I'm very sensitive to the misapplication of the term "racist" (having seen it grossly abused countless times; both by media pundits, and our dear friend mediator, over at the CSB) , I'd have to say that while it doesn't rank that highly on the racist comments meter, it could qualify....
It's certainly "racially tinged" and brings in race gratuitously...
If someone referred to an Asian person as "that yellow sonofabitch" I think most people would see that remark as having an element of racism to it. This looks like the same thing to me....
From everything I have read, Mr. Williams has good reason to harbor anger and resentment towards Woods, regarding the manner and timing of his abrupt firing after 12 years of loyal work. Woods treated him shabbily, as he has many others, (first and foremost his ex-wife)
I suspect that it was that bitterness, and perhaps being a bit "in the bag" as opposed to "on the bag", at the awards dinner that led him to let out with that gratuitous racial reference....
However, his central point; that Wood is an "areshole"....
is of course well documented, and beyond dispute.

In that formulation "arsehole" serves to denigrate the identity which precedes it.
No, the intent was racist as he has admitted and apologized for.

Re: I fail to see the racism.
But where is Tiger on the all-asshole scale? Ok, quite a bit of sexual misconduct and he fired an employee who is pissy about it. But then he also made that employee's career and he was at at-will employee.
But where would you rank him against these:
Arnold Swartzenegger
Newtie Gingrich
Bill Clinton
Gene Simmons
Eric Clapton
Bill Bennett
John Edwards
Larry Craig
Ted Haggard
Jack Ryan

Re: I fail to see the racism.
On the other hand, if Williams had said ‘‘It was my aim to shove it right up that Black Thai arsehole,’’ everyone in the room wearing a black tie would have been insulted.
Re: I fail to see the racism.
Would have been racist if he'd have said "white arsehole"?
Is white a race?
Is black a race for that matter?

If he was black and and Woods was white, yes.Would have been racist if he'd have said "white arsehole"?
Technically no, but everybody knows what one is talking about when those terms are used....Is white a race?
Is black a race for that matter?
"White and "black" are not "races" but they are short hand terms that refer to races...

Re: I fail to see the racism.
Like a lot of such remarks, it said more about the speaker than it did about Mr. Woods.
Surely, Mr. Williams is aware that Woods is a "post racial" figure in the world's consciousness. He is no more thought of as a "Black" man than he is as a "Thai" man. He's just a guy.
His understandable sentiment of wanting to minimize the importance of the accomplishments that he and Woods shared, could have been said in other ways, but regardless, they ring hollow.
(a) A caddy has next-to-nothing to do with a golfer's success, and
(b) nothing Williams ever says can diminish Woods' accomplishments as a golfer, which are unique and extraordinary, regardless of anything he every did in his personal life, or whether he ever reaches the same level again.
Woods has his faults, but Williams has to register above him on the "asshole" scale. What a total fucking ingrate.

Re: I fail to see the racism.
Really? Top golfers must be pretty dumb then. Why give a guy a small fortune if you could just get a tasty bird to carry your clubs for you instead?dgs49 wrote:

He could get one of these for half the cost!At the top end, caddy pay days can be better than many players in the field. Since June 2006, Tony Navarro, Adam Scott's caddy, has pulled in $442,548; Allistair Matheson, who walks with Geoff Ogilvy, made $337,888.
So much so that many caddies, like fifth-ranked earner Damon Green, who has carried Zach Johnson's bag since 2004, started out as pro golfers but switched over. Green played on the Nike Tour from 1994 to 1995, but his 2006 to 2007 caddy earnings of $367,716 were more than he ever made as a pro.
That's nothing compared with Steve Williams. The race car-driving, pro caddy from age 15 walks the links with Tiger Woods and made $1.27 million last year. Had he been a tour player instead of a caddy, those earnings would have put him in the top 75.

Re: I fail to see the racism.
It may have been a racial slur, but does one slip in 13 years, make one racist?
I think the really bad form was printing private comments. Racism aside, how many of us would want our bosses to know what we really think of them?

Re: I fail to see the racism.
So let me try again. (Assuming for the sake of debate that Woods can correctly be called “black” as he is actually of mixed race.)
To call Woods a “black golfer” is not an insult.
To call Woods a “black sporting hero” is not an insult.
To call him a “black @rsehole” is an insult, but not a racist one.
To say “Woods is an @rsehole because he is black”, is racist. (I would heartily condemn this statement if it had been the one made.)
To say “like all blacks, Woods is an @rsehole,” is racist. (I would heartily condemn this statement if it had been the one made.)
To use the adjective “black” is not of itself racist. Williams’ insult, was an intentional insult, but it was not racist in intent or in execution.
Woods himself states that Williams in not a racist.

Re: I fail to see the racism.
I wouldn't bother putting the colour adjective before his achievement.
I would call him a golfer and a sporting hero.
The colour reference included is not necessary. He either is those things, or he is not.

I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

Because their skin is not yellow. It comes in varying degrees what we call white, from very light to dark brown, just like Caucasians ( honkeys) . Honkeys and mongoloids ( I prefer Chineeseoid, more representative) have a common central Asian ancestor.Lord Jim wrote: If someone referred to an Asian person as "that yellow sonofabitch" I think most people would see that remark as having an element of racism to it.
