Interracial marriages in the U.S. have climbed to 4.8 million - a record one in 12 - as a steady flow of new Asian and Hispanic immigrants expands the pool of prospective spouses.

Blacks are now substantially more likely than before to marry whites.

A Pew Research Center study, released today, details a diversifying America where interracial unions and the mixed-race children they produce are challenging typical notions of race.

'The rise in interracial marriage indicates that race relations have improved over the past quarter century,' said Daniel Lichter, a sociology professor at Cornell University. 'Mixed-race children have blurred America's color line.

The figures for 'white' refer to those whites who are not of Hispanic ethnicity.

For purposes of defining interracial marriages, Hispanic is counted as a race by many in the demographic field.

The study finds that 8.4 per cent of all current U.S. marriages are interracial, up from 3.2 per cent in 1980.

While Hispanics and Asians remained the most likely, as in previous decades, to marry someone of a different race, the biggest jump in share since 2008 occurred among blacks, who historically have been the most segregated.

FWIW, the entertainment media incessantly promote interracial interaction (marriage, of course is passe, except among homosexuals). Most prime-time dramas and comedies feature at least one interracial couple, one gay couple, and/or a white couple that adopts a black kid. Light-skinned, mixed-race models and actresses are ubiquitous in advertizing.

It's all about proximity. The more one is exposed to people of other races, the more likely it will be that some spark will fly.

Hispanic is a term reserved to people living in the Americas, who are not of pure European descent. Someone born in Spain would not call themselves "Hispanic", any more than someone from Italy would call themselves "Latin'.

Not many self-respecting humans would refer to themselves as "Hispanic." This bullshit term aggregates scores of nationalities and cultures that may be totally different, and even in conflict. It is the equivalent of referring to everyone who natively speaks "English" as "Anglo."

Interracial marriage is the future. Those who limit their choices in marriage to a smaller and narrower group will have fewer and worse choices. It is mathematically obvious to even the meanest of intelligences.

Interracial marriage is only opposed by racial bigots and the religious-stupid; low-functioning people, all.

There is one problem. It does not effect everyone but those it does have a serious dilemma. People of mixed-race have few options for organ transplants. But then outside of people of European descent many groups refuse to sign donor cards so there are few options already.

Hispanic is a term for 'of Spanish descent.' The confusion among American hispanics is that some people may live a Spanish dervived culture, including family names, languages and relgions, while carrying little or no European DNA.

This quote in particular, and the article in general, point up the complete bankruptcy of the concept of "race." I'm sure it would amuse both Jim and BigRR to learn that they are in "interracial marriages." The sooner that catgegorization is eliminated from human language and thought, the better.

Most successful marriages are based on common values and backgrounds, and similar intelligence and interests. For those who believe the fairytale that the chemical attraction we commonly refer to as "love" conquers all, I suppose an inter-racial marriage is as good as any. For those who care to look at the pertinent statistics, the reality may be otherwise.

There is nothing morally "wrong" with inter-racial marriage, but with all of the cultural factors attacking marriage anyway, adding innumerable cultural and family conflicts is definitely swimming against the tide.

The entertainment media are constantly brainwashing us in dozens of different ways. Some of it is harmless and some is insidious. In the 80's we were shown (incessantly) that people who smoked dope and snorted cocaine were the "beautiful people," much cooler than everyone else. Have you ever seen a college fraternity or any fraternity member portrayed on television or in a film in a positive light? I haven't. How often do you see anyone with a Southern or Western accent depicted as a person of intelligence? How often do you see an ugly or a fat person portrayed in a positive light?

Brainwashing.

Virtually every inter-racial relationship you will see in entertainment will be shown in a positive light, and there are many more of them in the programs than there are in reality.

An interesting study came up with a pair of intriguing findings:

Marriages involving a black husband and white wife were twice as likely to divorce as marriages involving a white husband and white wife.

Marriages involving a white husband and black wife were substantially less likely to end in divorce than marriages involving a white husband and white wife; the former pairing’s divorce rate was 44 percent less than the latter.
