I found a dirt cheap used very good condition (box a bit banged up, books crisp and never read condition) box set of Roald Dahl stories on Abebooks.com which came in today’s mail and I am just ridiculously excited!

I don’t want to know anything more about Roald Dahl than that he was a brilliant storyteller. (I already know he was also a rotten bastard much of the time.)

Hmmmm...   Garrison Keillor was also a brilliant storyteller, who never went to trial or anything, but he is still a pariah.  But I guess there are rotten bastards for whom, if you like their works, one is willing overlook their peccadilloes, and rotten bastards who, despite their works or other achievements, you hope will rot in hell and are willing to consign their legacy to the furnace.

The problem, if I may quote 'Mad-eye' Mooney from the Harry Potter franchise, is how do you tell the difference?

I talked myself out of a trip to Hartford to see TKAM with Richard Thomas and now I’ve just bought a ticket to see it in Providence - I am beyond excited, I can’t wait!

TKAM is To Kill a Mockingbird- in this case the stage adaptation by Aaron Sorkin, starring Richard Thomas on tour (the Broadway run initially starred Jeff Daniels).

For just a second, that BBC news header really caught my attention. Then it turns out to be boring Brazilian soccer doings.

I used to love grilled cheese on the slow rise rosemary sourdough from Nashoba Brook bakery outside Boston - I prefer letting them make it homemade for me, they're much cleverer at bread than I.

I went through a phase where I explored the whole range of cheeses available at my fairly sophisticated market - all the ones appropriate for grilled cheese, that is. Made some very delectable creations, too - with yummy add ins like grilled veggies and jams and such.

Now I can barely eat cheese. I use parmesan in some of my recipes and on rare occasion I eat pizza but I always feel like a slug afterward. I've cut so far down on saturated fats that my body rebels when I try to consume the really rich stuff, like cheese. This makes my heart both happy and bereft.

The single biggest argument against the existence of God is that cheese isn't good for us. If there was a god, cheesy broccoli soup and grilled cheese sandwiches would be 100% health food.

Alas,I don't even use parmesan Not just the fat, but cheese is also heavy with salt. So I don't even dream about grilled cheese sandwiches. I do still dream about a good meat ball sub, which must have red sauce and lots of cheese. For me the big surprise was the way my body reacts to a nice plate of fish and chips. All that deep frying oil works better and faster than exlax.

I can get that same effect from a nice plate of fried chicken.

Alas I have given up all fried foods. I get my labs done next week so we will see if this virtuous living has been for good or naught.

I don't believe that cheese is bad for you. Like any other food, too much of it isn't a good thing. Unless you have an allergy to dairy products, there are good ingredients in cheeses, like calcium, protein and even probiotics.

Therefore, eaten in moderation, cheese can be gouda for you.

Nobody eats cheese at the moderated rate that would possibly be healthy. Cheese is full of nature's opiate, meant to make the calf stay on the teat or the baby on the breast. It makes us so blissed out we stuff our faces to distraction. And then it clogs our arteries and kills us.

"My name is BSG and I am a cheese-aholic"

"Hello BSG"

"I started out with cheddar but then it quickly led to harder stuff. Long story short, one day I was found passed out in a dumpster behind a cheese factory covered in Limburger. I had finally hit bottom. Lucky for me a helpful dumpster diver directed me to Cheese-Aholics Anonymous. She saved my life. Now I'm cheese free but I realize I'm just one cheese stick away from falling backward and becoming a possible feta-tality. One day at a time. That's all I can do. Thank you."

Cheese is full of nature's opiate...
From the link she attached ...
Cheese contains casein.  It also contains casein fragments called casomorphins, a casein-derived morphine-like compound.  Basically, dairy protein has opiate molecules built in.
Uhhh... so do a lot of others – chocolate leaps immediately to mind.
And of course, BSG herself is an unapologetic consumer of other mood-altering chemicals such as THC in its various forms.
Makes me wonder why she is so vehemently anti-cheese, of all things.

Discussion with a wet behind the ears resident (Dr WBTE) of a surgeon (Dr R) to whom I had been referred for a surgical procedure for which I have been waiting for almost two years:

Dr WBTE: Your current condition is within the range of what would be considered a successful outcome to the surgery, so I'm not sure what you expect to gain by going ahead.

Me: I have spent the last two years waiting for referrals, waiting for tests, and just plain waiting to reach the point where Dr E (the referring doctor) and I have decided that this is the best course of action for me, so if you are thinking of spending even more time attempting to revisit that decision, I am not interested.

Dr WBTE: (clearly flummoxed that I would deign to challenge him) Well, well, the decision whether to proceed with surgery won't be up to you or me, it will be up to Dr R.

Me: We can certainly agree that the decision will not be up to you.

Fuck this crap, I have gotten too old and have had to deal with far too many doctors to take this shit, particularly for someone who didn't even bother to read the half page of notes that the referring doctor had sent over before calling me in.

Anytime I hear the name of the nation of Abu Dhabi in the news (e.g., the recent UN COP28 climate summit) in my mind I hear it as Fred Flintstone shouting "YABBU-DHABBI-DOOOO!"
