Re: The further adventures of locationgal
I think 12 hours is too much for safety. But you're in charge. And there's nothing wrong with Super 8 for LD travel.

Have a safe and pleasant drive!

Yep, enjoy the drive. I personally enjoy the time behind the wheel on solo trips, and wish you the same.

It's great time for thinking through things, Big RR. I've often wondered if I wouldn't like long haul trucking, at least for a short stint. Maybe if my job interviews don't pan out.
Something I figured out from my observations last night while trying to find a room: lot of people are living at Super 8 and Motel 6 in this economy. Count your blessings! I'm grateful to have a home to go to.

A 12 hour day, not 12 hours driving. These days I need more frequent pee/stretch stops, and so does Little Bear.MajGenl.Meade wrote:I think 12 hours is too much for safety. But you're in charge. And there's nothing wrong with Super 8 for LD travel.

How Steinbeckian of you. "Travels with Charlie" is one of my all time favorites. I have driven that stretch (various routes, north and south) many times and it is the land of the dull and boring. Well, this time of year anyway, not even corn to stare out the window at.
Re: The further adventures of locationgal
Also of note is that there is a tornado watch out for most of Indiana and part of Illinois till 9pm should you be stopping round these parts. How dandy.

Keep your eyes on the roadnot even corn to stare out the window at.
And your hands upon the wheel
Re: The further adventures of locationgal
I started the day with a lovely breakfast at The Fryin' Pan in Sioux Falls, and the first half hour on the road was ok.
Then it became a couple of hours of hellish driving in snow/wind/slush with hardly a plow to be seen. Saw a fatal crash in MN while driving in the snow (the aftermath, not the actual crash). Traffic pretty heavy of course with it being Xmas week.
Finally got past the snow to moderate rain, which quickly became driving pouring buckets of rain, in the pitch dark (punctuated by brilliant bolts of lightning). Stopped twice to see if it would let up, finally gave up my plans of getting past Chicago tonight and I'm snuggled up in a best western in some tiny town in southern WI for the night.
Early start tomorrow; I'll get there by Xmas day, anyway!

Best road song of all time?
Re: The further adventures of locationgal
Got to my sisters in New York at around 10:30 last night, gorged on leftover ham & veggies, got cozy in the guest bed and now just chilling with my sister, brother in law and great nephew. SO good to be with family! Glad I decided to move home.
Very mild weather here, the grass is still green.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Mauston, WI - not terribly tiny, population @ 4500. Stopped at a cheese shop and filled a box with cheeses and summer sausage for my sister's family.

Ah yes, I know the town well. I'm from La Crosse, WI — about 70 miles west, more or less, along I-90.
You must have been driving I-94 — at least until you got to Tomah WI when it merged and ran together with I-90 as far as Madison.
Drive carefully on your way back.

Re: The further adventures of locationgal
You betcha. Between 1978 and 1998 I used to do a 100-km bicycle tour (the 'Tour du Lac') in the fall every year to benefit the American Cancer Society there. The route always included a roughly 25-mile loop around the lake, and then did a second loop that — depending on how they routed it that particular year — went out into the Burlington - Alpine Valley - Whitewater - Elkhorn - Delavan area. The Geneva Lakes area itself is a destination resort that draws a lot of trade from Milwaukee and Chicago and prices reflect that, but once you get about 20 miles or so away from the 'touristy' areas prices get back to normal.

Re: The further adventures of locationgal
yeah, older , the patches of good grass have thrived and spread and haven t gone dormant at all, and the patches of weedy grass, which had turned brown already, are greening again. patches of clover are coming back to life too.
