but I'm having a ton of fun with my intro to digital photography class. The purpose is to allow us to take manual setting photographs, for greater control of the image and ultimately artistic results. Week three class is tonight (out of 8). We are learning the very basics, although the class is divided into 1 hour on technical aspects and the camera, 1 hour on composition, and 1 hour critiquing the photographs we submitted from the week prior. Each week we submit three photographs or so, and the instructor puts them up on the screen and we discuss. It's a bit nerve-wracking, but also really fun and rewarding when people like what you've done.

It's a black shouldered kite. Ever since I first saw him on a local nature reserve, about a year back, he's become something of a muse to me.

Guin - really nice pics, esp. the statement made in the Children sign - appear to be bullet marks, no? .22? How ironic.
You may be no Ansel Adams - well I should hope not - but with practise and a good eye you can be very much in the neighbourhood of...

Bitch!

I'm using a Canon Rebel T-3 with the standard 18-55mm lens, and a little post-shotting manipulation in iPhoto. In the market for a zoom, to expand my shooting capabilities and I also expect I'll be moving over to Lightshop 4 later this year -- my instructor teaches another course in that program, which I plan to take in the fall.
The "Children" sign is just down the street from my house. I am fascinated by its age and condition, and love the thing growing out of the top. That sign is so old I can't tell if its rust or bb gun pock marks. If you look closely you can tell that "Children" is hand-painted -- which should give you some sense of the age.....
And LJ, adjust your eyes, that cat isn't purple she's grey - albeit highly saturated and pushed a bit towards the red tones to make her tongue pop.
And thanks Meade -- I'm having such fun, which is the entire point!

As well as the standard lens I have a Tamron 300m. I shoot in RAW format, total neutral with no in camera processing, and use photoshop for "developing"
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
We will get to RAW format later, I'm told. Or maybe in the Lightshop class this fall. iPhoto does very basic manipulation, but enough to get the feel of it. I enjoy that piece as much as the actual shooting!
The picture quality, even at my entry level camera, so just incredible. And of course the digital format and the ability to manipulate the images gives me results that are head and shoulders above what I ever did with a film camera. Even in auto-mode, before I started this class, I took more images than ever before that I thought were decent.
I also use a wi-fi card, so as soon as I come home, I leave the camera on and it automatically uploads to the locations I've told it to go, on my computer. It can be set for my iPhone as well, if I'm traveling, don't have the Mac, and want to clear my card of images without losing anything. It's more expensive than other cards, but makes the transfer completely mindless and quick. It does eat a bit more battery, but that's not been an issue yet for me.

Interesting CP, I don't see purple, and I've looked at the photo on multiple screens, at different sizes. I'm sure my instructor would have mentioned it. Like I said, the color is super saturated and pushed towards warm tones. "Purple" must be how its coming out on your monitor.

It needs a poll - but I don't have that power. And it is pink. Not that there's anything wrong with that.....

The pink & dark color of its tongue, along with the slight touch of pink in the flesh of its ears might be influencing the color perception of some people.
On this face shot I see brown, black & white highlights on what looks like a a mostly gray cat.
There's no way to be certain without seeing a photo of the entire cat.

It's definitely added to the whole photography experience for me, and I definitely do enjoy it. I love the idea of bringing out in the image what I saw through the lens.
Here's one I'm working on at present.
Ps. The cat has a mauve tinge on my monitor too.
