The snake is getting close to shedding.
I envy you with all those reptiles around. I love reptiles and amphibians. Scales rock.

How can you tell it's close to shedding mate?

The scales have a blueish/dullish tint to them. In a day or so his eyes will glaze over with blueish tinted lens (he'll be pretty much blind as far as seeing is concerned, but they can smell through their tongue and feel to get around)and in about 4-5 dayes he will shed his skin. Then he will be much more brightly colored. As a kid I had 100 snakes at more than one time. I had 10 females and 2 males and all gave birth at the same time (garter snakes are live bearers). Gave me some pocket change selling the snakes to pet stores.

Be careful of snakes with "blue" eyes. They are pretty much blind (about a day or less away from shedding) and will strike rather than run (slither) away. Of course some snakes are just nasty and will strike regardless. The Asp and I believe the cobra fall into that category. The rattlesnakes I have encountered, given a way out, will take it.
