No this is not spam. That's my favorite bit of Engrish I came across on my trip to Peru. Hopefully tomorrow I'll feel up to starting my trip in review (3 flights in 24 hours is a bit much) But I thought I'd at least get the thread started.

So......

What did you get for driving the sample of the special discount?

Was it a llama?

I don't know it was for an (apparent) legitimate massage.

Massages while driving is very dangerous!

I think it's supposed to mean "bring this flyer in for a special discount" but only because that would make sense not because it's gives yuo any sort of clue to what it's supposed to mean.

RAW is the only way to go.

Anything else is a waste. Thankfully cards keep getting cheaper....

BTW - you try any of the local "lettuce?"

What do you mean?

I only had lettuce once while in Peru an that was when each and every leaf was individually washed. But if you're talking about coca yeah I had a bunch of that in pretty much every legal form they serve it.

I still have a bag of coca candy and I had to convince my dad to ditch his coca (leaf) stash before we left since we only had about an hour to get through customs and didn't want to chance missing our connection.

Ok Day One:

The van Came and Picked us up at our houses and dropped us off at the airport pretty uneventful I would guess then again the whole flying thing was new to me. LAnded Changed planes and had a quick bite at GHWB Airport. Boarded Our flight to Peru.

I know riveting reading isn't it? What do you want a play by play assessment of the games (backgammon) movies (Land of the Lost, Mars Attacks) and TV shows (original Star Trek) I watched/played on the flight?

Landed at LIA Got our luggage and Changed some money (mistake (well sort of)) and found our rides. (My parents had a separate cab). Our diver after leading us what seemed a far distance (being a stranger in a strange land and all) Showed us to his car. Nothing to write home about really It was a Crown (a SA Toyota make apparently) We loaded in and out Driver, Carlos, Introduced us to what Peruvians call driving.

To be continued..

Title: Re: By driving a sample of this special discount
Post by: Crackpot on March 07, 2010, 09:57:04 PM
So Carlos let us in on the ins and outs of Peruvian hired transportation and how the Busses (private) are the worst drivers and all together not safe unless you really know what you're doing and where you're going. As cabs go, fares are negotiated up front and are subject to your negotiating skills. When we got to the Miraflores District He took some side roads to show us some of the sights and tell us about the district in which we'd be spending most of our time It was a little difficult since it was long past dark but he pointed out the Districts private security and explained how they work with the police and the people of the district. He even took us by his house. You could sense the overwhelming pride he felt for his district (Voted the best run in Lima) And after not too long we arrived at our hotel and He sheepishly asked for his promised $25 that the hotel had negotiated for us. I could tell he thought it was an overcharge, And it was, but the the extra he put in made it feel like money well spent. (My parents weren't so lucky with their driver) At the hotel we checked in thoroughly exhausted after a day spent sitting on our collective asses. We went straight to our rooms and to bed (but not before Trying my first Inca Kola (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inca_Kola) Sweet but tasty.

uploading photos is going to be a chore 7 photos for today 5 which I'll probably post.

I think I'm going to have to find something that resizes and compresses the photos as they took up 16% of my total space.

I'll probably be playing with things as time goes on.

Title: Re: By driving a sample of this special discount

Day two:

Ate breakfast at the hotel and met the rest of our group (I'll probably be mentioning/pointing out some of them later) And around lunchtime we embarked on our first trip around the streets of Lima.

Rules about walking in Lima:

1. You don't have the right of way.
2. Who am I kidding there is no two.

It really isn't that bad as long as you observe the rule and don't drag ass you won't have many problems walking as long as you stay aware of your surroundings.

After a quick overview of the lay of the land which included a local map we Stopped at a Small restaurant for lunch where we ate and our guide brought a Money Changer with whom he negotiated a special rate to exchange our funds.

Note about Money in Peru: Their Currency the Nuevo Sol while apparently fairly stable Is still to young to be fully trusted Especially since the former and now current president crashed the old currency trying "the print more money to pay off your debt" system of economics. ::) Because of this major purchases Rent, Cars, etc... are made in dollars or to a lesser but growing extent Euros. So Money changers are everywhere Just look for the green vests.

To be continued Next time with pics!

Ok where was I?

Ok after lunch and currency exchange we took a stroll to the District Capital

(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4055/441 ... 1a373d.jpg)

and the District Church

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2778/441 ... 3be6f6.jpg)

After that we were released on our own recognizance. The wife and I walked "along the coast" (which is not entirely true the coast was about 150 feet down) and visited some of the Parks our driver had pointed out the night before

Like the Parque De Amore

(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4060/441 ... 672e3c.jpg)

They say there's a yearly kissing contest held there every Valentine's Day.

Over the Bridge and down the Cost you Start Trodding Upon Larcomar (http://www.larcomar.com/inicio.aspx?language=en-US) a thre story Mall built into the cliff.

(http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2764/441 ... 7f9f50.jpg)

Apparently You can stay up there forever Gob.
THe Mall is a Host of many Stores including a theatre a satellite Gold Museum. (which we saw a few days later but none of the pictures turned out) and many exotic restaurants including a Burger King, a KFC, a Chiles and a Hooters. Yes a Hooters.

BTW you notice the Sky? That's what it's almost always like. Overcast. Less than an inch of rain a year but (almost) always overcast.

That evening the family and I asked the concierge about dinner recommendations with not much luck he didn't have much English forebode and we couldn't figure out why he was recommending tropical fruit. Lucky we could tell he was directing us to Larcomar and Figured even If we couldn't figure out where he was directing us we'd find something to eat there.

After a short walk we we arrived at the mall and went down to the first level. Can anyone guess what awaited us? There's a nice restaurant overlooking the ocean called Mangos. ::Collective Forehead Smack::

So we go in and and are seated by the hostess. We get a seat on the Patio and are served by the one person under 30 in Peru that has no English. And here we were two people with really limited Spanish (My dad and I) and My wife with a semester of Spanish in college (and never used since) We felt so bad. After some time trying futilely to communicate he got the Hostess to translate in order to take our orders.

Have you ever been accidentally insulted? Moments after we were served our delicious dinners Our waiter arrived with the Ketchup, Salt and Pepper. Ouch.

Note on tipping in Peru. 5-10 Percent and then only for excellent service. We tipped the waiter 30 he really deserved it. As we left the Waiter Chased us down to thank us to which we could only say "you're welcome" and "you deserved it" My Wife had an epiphany and gave him a "de nada".

And thus concludes our 2nd day.
