The way it was explained to me was once the skull hit, the brain sloshed back and forth and the nerves that run through the nasal cavity got severed. So I don't think it maters what side of the brain the sense of smell is. It's that the "source" piple line got cut.

I also heard that it happens to many people in car accidents when the head whips back and hits the headrest. I remember the doc saying something like 1% of the population have this.

Whoa.. that description from your doctor sounds more precise than what I was told - and makes it sound even worse than what I realized at the time.
