At last! How Trump would force Mexico to pay for that wall

Post by Bicycle Bill »

In a two-page memo to The Washington Post, Donald Trump outlined for the first time how he would seek to force Mexico to pay for his 1,000-mile border fence, which Trump has made a cornerstone of his presidential campaign and which has been repeatedly scoffed at by current and former Mexican leaders.

In one word — blackmail.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics ... ative_2_na

In the memo Trump says that, as president, he would force Mexico to pay for a border wall by threatening to cut off the flow of billions of dollars in payments that immigrants send back home to their native country, an idea that could devastate the Mexican economy and set up an unprecedented showdown between the United States and a key regional ally.

But don't take my word for it.  Read it for yourself, right here.

Finished?

Yes, you read that right.  By changing a rule under the anti-terrorism "Patriot Act" — it would probably have to be done through a Presidential directive, or whatever those things are that everybody says Obama is illegally using to undermine this country — he would find a way to directly interfere with the right and ability of private companies and corporations such as Western Union to conduct business while at the same time threatening to completely crash the Mexican economy.  And I don't even want to think about who or what would be there to supplant the existing Mexican government — probably someone like el Chapo, the Medellin cartel, or someone like that.

But he won't do it if Mexico "contributes" X-billion dollars to pay for the wall.  Sure sounds like a blackmail demand to me.

Even more confusing is that a couple paragraphs later he suggests raising the fees for visas to enter the United States, claiming that "even a small increase in visa fees would pay for the wall".  But if he is going to strong-arm Mexico into paying for the wall, why would we need to raise visa fees?  To pay for a second wall in case the first one doesn't hold?

Of course, this automatically leads to a logical question — why is this only revealed in a memo to a newspaper?  If he thinks this is such a great goddamned idea, why hasn't he said anything about it while on the campaign trail?  Answer:  because this a pile of bullshit so huge that it would dwarf the Great Pyramid of Giza.  He knows it; the Democrats know it; Mexico knows it; the American people know it.  Hell, even an amoeba would know it.

So we finally get a look, in black and white, at the eccentric way of thinking of the megalomaniac that is Donald Trump.  This is the sort of thing that needs to be publicized far and wide.  I'm sure this will not change the thinking of any die-hard Trump supporters, but those who are undecided or merely leaning in his direction need to see this before they make a huge mistake and put the reins of power in the hands of Delusional Donald.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

It is in line with his many other stupid ideas, which seem to be made up on the spot as often as not. However, as the article notes, if the bizzaro world actually occurs (Trump becomes POTUS), we can all thank his predecessor for expanding the use of presidential directives and dictates (the whole goose/gander goodness thing). Of course, every once in awhile those dictates are brought to court and overturned for exceeding executive authority (isn't that one of Obama's records?)

It's utterly nuts......completely crackers... :loon

First, he wants to interpret The Patriot Act in a way that would never stand up in court, so that he can somehow prevent illegal aliens from wiring money out of the country...(Which is kind of weird, since he's also said that he intends to forcibly deport all the illegal aliens...so who would be left here for him prevent from sending money?)

The centerpiece of this "plan" is to get the Mexican government to agree to pay for the wall by threatening a series of steps designed to ruin the Mexican economy if they don't pony up...

Barack Obama had it exactly right, (leave it to Donald Trump to get me to write that sentence...) when he observed that destroying the Mexican economy would be the best way to assure an unprecedented flood of illegals coming over the border...

Drumpf said a couple of weeks ago when he was asked who he talks to for foreign policy advice that, "well first, I talk to myself"....

This must have been something he cooked up in one of those self-conversations, because no one with the slightest understanding of foreign policy or basic macro-economics would ever have come up with it...(or if they did, they certainly wouldn't admit it)

For awhile now, some in the media have been pressing Trump to come up with "specifics" for his schemes...

This, along with some of his other recently expressed "specifics" (pull out of NATO, impose 45% tariffs, encourage a nuclear arms race in Asia, to name just a few...) shows why he was wise to resist such pressure for so long...

The only thing more ridiculous and outrageous then what Donald Trump says without providing specifics, is what Donald Trump says when he does provide specifics...

ETA:
if the bizzaro world actually occurs (Trump becomes POTUS)
Thankfully, at long last, the prospect of that nightmare becoming reality now recedes with each passing day... :ok

Perhaps posted before but more than worth the time investment:

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
