Who said this...

Post by Lord Jim »

critiquing the 2012 election:
Republicans didn’t have anything going for them with respect to Latinos and with respect to Asians... The Democrats didn’t have a policy for dealing with illegal immigrants, but what they did have going for them is they weren’t mean-spirited about it... They didn’t know what the policy was, but what they were is they were kind... He had a crazy policy of self deportation...

It sounded as bad as it was, and he lost all of the Latino vote... He lost the Asian vote. He lost everybody who is inspired to come into this country...
I agree with that guy...

Damn shame he isn't running...

Republicans decided that the guy who believes all Mexicans to be rapists and murderers is the better choice.

Well, in all fairness, he didn't say that all Mexicans are rapists and murderers...

Only the ones that the Mexican government is sending across the border...

And he even allowed for the possibility that while most of them were "bringing in drugs, they're killers, they're rapists"....

Some of them, he "assumed", were "actually good people"...

"Donald Trump is a German. Which is fine, it's great. I would never imply Trump is a Nazi because he's German. I mean, he has a lot of Nazi supporters, he re-tweets Nazis and a lot of people think he's a Nazi. I wouldn't say it, I don't know anything about it. I mean, he trashes America constantly and expresses admiration for our enemies, dictators, fascists and other authoritarians. I don't know if that's because he's German. I think it's fine he's German. I wouldn't say he hates America because he's a German. I don't think he's a fascist authoritarian because he's a Nazi. I'm sure he's proud of his heritage, it's fine. It's just that we're electing an American President and it's a conflict of interest."

The really strange thing to me is that Mr. Trump has talked freely in public about how this judge is biased and should not be ruling in the case against Trump University.

But he has not instructed his lawyers to file the very routine paperwork to ask the judge to recuse himself.

Is this the way President Trump will build his wall, the beautiful wall, and all the other things he has promised--just talk?

Apparently this one was even too much for Newt Gingrich to stomach...

And he's got a pretty strong stomach:
Newt Gingrich’s Criticism on Judge Remarks Surprises Donald Trump

Donald J. Trump expressed surprise on Monday that one of his supporters from the Republican Party, Newt Gingrich, had criticized him for his remarks about the heritage of the federal judge overseeing a lawsuit against the defunct Trump University.

Mr. Trump spoke in an interview with “Fox and Friends,” a day after Mr. Gingrich, the former House speaker, and Mitch McConnell, the Senate majority leader, denounced the presumptive presidential nominee for calling Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel a “Mexican.” The judge was born in Indiana to Mexican parents.

Mr. Gingrich called the remarks “inexcusable” and the biggest mistake Mr. Trump has made.

“I saw Newt, I was surprised at Newt, I thought it was inappropriate what he said,” :loon :loon :loon Mr. Trump said on the program.

Mr. Trump insisted he was only defending himself from questions from the news media. But Mr. Trump raised the topic of Judge Curiel’s heritage himself in a rally in San Diego, where the case is being heard.

Mr. Gingrich has been mentioned as a possible vice-presidential choice on the Republican ticket with Mr. Trump.

ETA:

I guess Trumpty thought it had been too long since he had expressed his bigotry towards American Muslims, and he didn't want them to feel left out:
Could a Muslim Judge Be Neutral to Donald Trump? He Doesn’t Think So

Donald J. Trump, who said last week that a judge’s Mexican heritage should disqualify him from a lawsuit against Mr. Trump, expressed doubt on Sunday that a Muslim judge could remain neutral in the case, comments that are unlikely to ease concerns among his fellow Republicans who fear his controversial remarks could hurt the party in November.

Mr. Trump’s comments, made in an interview with John Dickerson, the host of CBS’s “Face the Nation,” followed his criticism of Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel, a federal judge in California overseeing a suit against the defunct Trump University. Mr. Trump said Judge Curiel had a “conflict of interest” in the case because of Mr. Trump’s proposed border wall with Mexico.

Republicans, concerned about how his contentious statements could harm their ability to retain control of the Senate and have a detrimental effect in down-ballot races, have struggled with how to distance themselves from Mr. Trump’s language without alienating his die-hard voters.

In a series of interviews on Sunday television news shows, Republicans repudiated Mr. Trump’s comments about Judge Curiel. But instead of softening his stance, Mr. Trump intensified it.

Mr. Dickerson asked Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, if a Muslim judge would be similarly biased because of Mr. Trump’s call for a ban on Muslim immigrants. “It’s possible, yes,” Mr. Trump said. “Yeah. That would be possible. Absolutely.”

When Mr. Dickerson said there was a tradition in the United States, a nation of immigrants, against judging people based on heritage, Mr. Trump replied, “I’m not talking about tradition, I’m talking about common sense, O.K.?”

In his interview with Mr. Dickerson, and in a separate discussion with Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Mr. Trump refused to retreat from his comments on Judge Curiel’s background.

It's certainly a relief to see the way Trump has modified his positions and toned down his rhetoric as he now focuses on expanding his appeal for the general election...
