Eventually, you will come to love Big Brother

Post by Bicycle Bill »

From Nineteen Eighty-Four, by George Orwell....
In the end the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it.  It was inevitable that they should make that claim sooner or later: the logic of their position demanded it.  Not merely the validity of experience, but the very existence of external reality, was tacitly denied by their philosophy.  The heresy of heresies was common sense.  And what was terrifying was not that they would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be right.  For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four?  Or that the force of gravity works?  Or that the past is unchangeable?  If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable what then? ...

The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears.  It was their final, most essential command.
Speaking to a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) gathering in Kansas City on Tuesday, Trump implored his audience to forget about what they see and read — and instead just listen to him.

“Don’t believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news,” Trump said, pointing at reporters as the crowd broke out in boos.  “Just remember, what you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.”

Fuck Jeanne Dixon or Nostradamus.  As far back as 1949, Orwell's vision of the future was far clearer — and terrifyingly more accurate — than anything those two ever came up with.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

This sounds so much like the way my grossly ignorant father tried raising me. A master manipulator adept in passive aggressive behavior. "I demand your respect or you'll get no dinner tonight." (And he meant it.) Absolute authoritarian rule. And when his little "brown shirt" started to revolt and speak out he had me purged.

He would have hated Trump not only because our president was a bat shit crazy Republican, but also because he was instructing his minions totally wrong. However, my father would have taught them what they needed to know. He was the Source.

... no, no, he's outside looking in...

bill--your point s well taken; constantly stating what can be factually shown is not true is a hallmark of trump and his form of doublethink. His Ministry of Truth will decide what is true and what is not, and all "right thinking" people will accept his word as inviolable.

And, as in 1984, you don't have to convince everyone, just enough people to make it stick, and eventually everyone else will give up resisting because there is no point to doing so. As Orwell showed, it's the way of every would-be strongman, and it often works inspite of the opposition. Trump (or really, his handlers/controllers) have learned this lesson well.
