I Thought He Was Supposed To Be The Smart Brother...

Post by Lord Jim »

The rejoinders to Trump's "Make America Great Again" are supposed to be "America is already great" and/or "America has always been great" but apparently somebody didn't get the memo:
NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo says America 'was never that great'

Washington (CNN)New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said America "was never that great" during a speech on Wednesday, drawing criticism from President Donald Trump and the Republican looking to unseat him in November.

Cuomo made the comments in the context of a larger argument about gender equality and women achieving their full potential.

"We're not going to make America great again. It was never that great," Cuomo, a Democrat, remarked at a bill signing event in New York City. The comment was met by an audible reaction from the crowd.

His comments were a response to President Donald Trump's campaign catchphrase -- "Make America Great Again."

Then after he pried his size 11 Salvatore Ferragamo from his molars and realized what a really stupid thing he had said, and what huge gift he had handed to Donald Trump, he finally managed to find the right page in his hymnal:
Cuomo flip-flops: America has always been great

Facing a firestorm of criticism from the White House to the statehouse, Gov. Cuomo reversed himself Friday and said he regrets saying America was “never that great.”

“The expression I used the other day was inartful, [Ya think?] so I want to be very clear: Of course America is great and of course America has always been great,” Cuomo told reporters on a conference call.

“No one questions that.”[Well, uhh, except of course for you, the day before...]

He added: “My family is evidence of American greatness,” pointing out how one generation after his grandfather Andrea emigrated from Italy, his father, Mario, became governor of New York.

Given the context of when he said the really stupid thing he said, I suspect that what Andrew would have liked to have said was something along the lines of:

"America is already great and has always been great, and part of her greatness lies in extending the opportunity to more and more of her citizens to achieve greatness"...

But that of course is not what he said...

Of course the words "Make America Great Again" imply that it isn't. But I don't suppose that the Trumpists, who are not famous for their use of logic, will agree.

His point was spot on, his delivery just sucked.

America hadn’t been great for a great many of the people living in it for a great many decades.

MAGA is about reinstating a status quo of preferential treatment for white male landowners.

The rest of us want America to deliver on the promises - applied to ALL people, regardless of color, creed, etc. It’s still very much a work in progress getting to that point, which was Cuomo's point.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.
