Donald Trump ignored even his own calls for civility and unity in politics in the wake of the pipe-bomb campaign, unleashing on Friday night a defiant attack on the media and “radical socialist” Democrats at his latest rally in North Carolina.

In front of a crowd of about 8,000 supporters at the Bojangles’ Coliseum sports arena, Trump castigated the TV and press reporters lined up in front of him. He reprised the phrase “fake news” that he notably refrained from uttering on Wednesday at his previous rally in Wisconsin just hours after a mail bomb was delivered to CNN’s studios in New York.

“We have seen an effort by the media in recent hours to use the sinister acts of one individual to score political points against me and the Republican party,” he said. “The media’s constant unfair coverage, deep hostility and negative attacks only serve to drive people apart and to undermine healthy debate.”

His comments incited loud chants of “CNN sucks” from the crowd.

The US president also returned to several of his most vitriolic attack lines against Democratic political opponents, despite the fact that the attempted mail bombs had been exclusively targeted, allegedly by an avowed Trump supporter, against leading liberal figures including several of those he demeaned. He referred to “Crooked Hillary” in a reference to Hillary Clinton, who was posted one of the 14 explosive devices intercepted since Monday, which in turn provoked loud chants of “Lock her up!”

He also denigrated “Cryin’ Chuck Schumer”, the Democratic minority leader in the US Senate, and criticized Nancy Pelosi, Schumer’s equivalent in the House of Representatives. Trump held back from attacking the Democratic Congress member Maxine Waters, whom he has frequently described in public as having a “low IQ”, saying: “I’m gong to be nice tonight so I won’t say it.”

On Friday, the suspect in the string of attempted attacks, Cesar Sayoc, 56, was arrested in Florida. Later in the day he was charged with five federal crimes, which carry a possible sentence of up to 48 years in prison. The charges cover 13 devices sent to individuals including Barack Obama. A 14th device was reported by the billionaire Tom Steyer later on Friday.

Sayoc is a registered Republican and an apparent fervent Trump supporter. His white van was covered in Trump paraphernalia and he had posted video of himself attending a Trump rally during the 2016 presidential campaign in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Trump’s unrestrained invective against his political opponents and the mainstream media made a mockery of his own call, only moments earlier at the Charlotte rally, for civility and unity. “Everyone will benefit if we can end the politics of personal destruction – we must unify as a nation in peace, love and harmony. Political violence must never be allowed in America and I will do everything in my power to stop it.”

Even before Trump arrived in North Carolina he was hinting that in his opinion it was time to end the relative unofficial truce that had been held since the pipe bombs were revealed on Wednesday and that the gloves might come off. Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House before departing for Charlotte on Marine One, he was asked whether he would tone down his rhetoric in the interests of national healing and bipartisanship.

“Well, I think I’ve been toned down, if you want to know the truth,” he said. “I could really tone it up. Because, as you know, the media has been extremely unfair to me and to the Republican party.”

I’m thinking it’s no coincidence wesw suddenly got the urge to depart.

FBI Director Christopher Wray says more than a dozen pipe bombs sent to prominent Democrats and CNN were "not hoax devices."

Wray says each of the pipe bombs contained materials that could react and cause a potential explosion.

Wray made the comments Friday as federal authorities announced the charging of 56-year-old Cesar Altieri Sayoc, of Florida, with five federal crimes including mailing explosives and threatening former U.S. presidents.

Wray says federal authorities have located 13 improvised explosive devices that were assembled in a similar manner.

On the Internet and in real life, Cesar Sayoc was not shy about broadcasting his support for Donald Trump and his contempt for those the president might consider enemies.

He plastered stickers across his white van — supportive of Trump — alongside images of the president’s critics with red targets over their faces and a large decal that read “CNN sucks.” On Twitter, the 56-year-old trafficked conspiracy theories and ranted about liberal billionaire George Soros, former president Barack Obama, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and others whose politics were out of line with his.

“He was crazed, that’s the best word for him,” said Debra Gureghian, the general manager of New River Pizza and Fresh Kitchen in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where Sayoc worked for several months. “There was something really off with him.”

Gureghian, said that Sayoc worked as a delivery-truck driver for several months but quit in January. The white van he drove to deliver pizzas was covered in disturbing images, she said, so the restaurant required him to park it on the side where it could not be seen. [I saw a news report that said because of the van, he was only allowed to work at night]

“It was puppets with their heads cut off, mannequins with their heads cut off, Ku Klux Klan, a black person being hung, anti-gay symbols, torchings, bombings, you name it, it was all over his truck,” [ "I'd like a large sausage and pepperoni with a side order of KKK literature please"] Gureghian said.

Sayoc was kept on because he did his work reliably and good drivers are hard to find, [they must be very hard to find] she said. But he disturbed his co-workers with racist comments and texts, she said.

“He was very angry and angry at the world, at blacks, Jews, gays,” she said. “He always talked about ‘if I had complete autonomy none of these gays or these blacks would survive.’ . . . He was very, very strange.”

Gureghian, who is lesbian, said that Sayoc made constant remarks about her sexuality.

“He used to tell me all the time that I was deformed and Jesus made a mistake in me,” she said.

She said Sayoc quit in January and told her he had trained to be a truck driver hauling hazardous materials, with a “top secret” clearance.

“He would categorize himself as a white supremacist," she said. "He would just say, ‘Take back the world. That’s what he would always say, ‘Take back the world.’ ”

On Friday, authorities arrested Sayoc, alleging in a criminal complaint that he was responsible for sending at least 13 potential explosive devices to prominent Democratic and media figures across the country in recent days — including Obama, Clinton, Soros, former attorney general Eric H. Holder Jr. and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.).

The social media accounts of Cesar Sayoc, the man arrested by federal authorities Friday in connection with a string of pipe bombs sent to a dozen top liberals, reveals a look into his deep hatred of Democrats and unwavering support for President Trump.

On Friday, police arrested Cesar Sayoc Jr., 56, of Florida and seized a white, full-size van with pro-Trump and anti-media bumper stickers covering its windows and doors. One of the stickers, for example, read “CNN sucks” — a frequent chant at Trump rallies across the country.

A Twitter account, with the handle @hardrock2016, was created under the man’s name and features a cascade of memes, photographs, and news articles critical of Trump’s top political nemeses.

“Democrats at it again more scams running out control ripping off elderly,” one post read.

“Go Republicans Red Wave Tsunami coming,” another post boasted. Several posts on what appear to be his Facebook page also show the man attending a "Make America Great Again" rally.

The social media accounted also targeted liberal billionaire George Soros, who was sent one of the packages on Monday. In a video posted on the account on June 7, the man took a video selfie at what appears to be a Trump rally chanting the president’s name.

further more (from a WaPo story today) 'Coulter did not back down from her statement, appearing to pivot instead to what appeared to be racially charged barbs about her belief that people of “immigrant stock” are more likely to engage in political violence. “I don’t make predictions, I cite history,” Coulter wrote in an email Friday to The Washington Post'.

Absolutely true. Every human being alive today on the North American continent is of immigrant stock. So is everyone on the entire planet, with the possible exception of a few tribes in sub-Sahara Africa. I suspect Ms Coulter has her own statistics showing that those few people do not engage in political violence.
