Nancy Pelosi calls SF hair salon visit 'a set up,' says salon owes her an apology

By Eric Ting, SFGATE Updated 2:14 pm PDT, Wednesday, September 2, 2020

After drawing fire for visiting a San Francisco hair salon closed to the general public amid the coronavirus pandemic, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to apologize and accused the salon of setting her up.

"I take responsibility for trusting the word of the neighborhood salon that I’ve been to over the years many times," the House Speaker told reporters at an event in Noe Valley on Wednesday. "And that when they said, 'We're able to accommodate people one person at a time, and that we can set up a time,' I trusted that. As it turns out, it was a set up, and I take responsibility for falling for a setup.”

Pelosi did not acknowledge that the arrangement she described is still a violation of the city's health order, as hair salons in the city are not allowed to serve anyone indoors, even one at a time.

On Tuesday, Fox News reported that Pelosi visited the hair salon for a blowout Monday even though the business has been closed to the public for six months under city rules. Fox News shared surveillance video of Pelosi's visit, and the owner told the network she was offended by her visit.

"It was a slap in the face that she went in, you know, that she feels that she can just go and get her stuff done while no one else can go in, and I can't work," eSalon owner Erica Kious told Fox News. "We have been shut down for so long, not just me, but most of the small businesses and I just can't — it's a feeling — a feeling of being deflated, helpless and honestly beaten down."

Pelosi asked for an apology on Wednesday.

"I think that this salon owes me an apology, for setting me up," she said before declining to take any additional questions on the topic.

San Francisco Mayor London Breed came to Pelosi's defense.

"It’s really unfortunate with everything happening in this country, with the fact that we basically have a dictator in charge of running this country," Breed said Wednesday of the attention Pelosi's visit has received. "And we have our Speaker Nancy Pelosi working day and night to fight against the challenges against the White House — she has spent her entire career working for this city and working for this country — it’s unfortunate that this conversation has blown up in the way that it has and distracted from the real issue. We don’t have good solid federal leadership helping us facilitate this COVID response … We have bigger issues as it relates to this country."

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

A hair salon set up an appointment for Pelosi and she went to the appointment and now the salon owner is offended? Maybe I'm misunderstanding this. Can somebody explain it to me?

Unless it was not the owner, but some other employee of the salon, that set up and carried out the appointment, without the owner's knowledge. In which case her beef is not with Pelosi, but with her own staff. The indignation seems more than a bit disingenuous, that gives credence to Pelosi's accusation of a set up.

Uh, no. The fact that she claims to have been misled into believing it was permitted is an acknowledgment that it was in actual fact prohibited.

From what I heard the stylist that cut Pelosi's hair was an independent stylist who rented a chair in the salon; I would think the owner should be more offended (hell, infuriated) by the behavior of the tenant stylist than with Pelosi as cutting hair in the building could result in the business losing its license.

It's obvious that the salon owner is not a Pelosi supporter. Which also means it's highly likely that if Trump had his hair done there (and his face dyed), the information would never have been revealed to Fox News - or by Fox News even if they knew about it.

I was surprised to learn that she pays someone to make her hair look like that. It looks like she does it at home.

This makes no sense to me. Did Speaker Pelosi break the door down and demand to be served? From the owner's statement it sounds like it. And I really am not sure what a blowout is.

That was the same excuse used in Animal Farm!
At Animal Farm, all of the animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. The pigs eat scares food and drink expensive liquor will the other animals go hungry.
I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

Basically you get your hair washed and blow dried/styled - sans any cutting = Blowout. People with money to spare get this done at a salon whilst most women do it at home.

I don't know Liberty, I don't quite get the Animal Farm connection; I could understand that someone might claim the stylist considered him or herself "more equal" and aboe to do what (s)he pleases, but I don't see where Pelosi is at fault. I guess you could say she should have known the rules, but those rules change so frequently that I am not surprised she relied on the stylist's representation that persons could be accommodated in the salon one at a time. There's absolutely nothing in the story that makes me think she was throwing her weight around to get special treatment or purposely flouting the law, and if there were such evidence (or even a suggestion of that) I am sure Fox would have repeated it over and over.

Is this for real, or a "friend of a friend" tale?
