Not just clueless. He's been a racist asshole forever. Remember, he took out a full-page ad in the New York Times demanding the execution of "roving bands of wild criminals" after 5 black and Latino teenagers were arrested in the "Central Park Jogger" case (and coerced into making false confessions). All were exonerated after the real serial rapist confessed and was confirmed by DNA evidence more than a decade later. But Trump still thinks they were guilty, regardless of the evidence. He has been a menace to civil rights for as long as he's been a public persona.

The problem is he was, more or less, a joke that few took seriously before he linked up with the handlers he has now. Sure, he'd spout off and take out full page ads, even publish ghost written books occasionally, but few took him any more seriously than they took other TV/media personalities. personalities.
