SOTU
Re: SOTU
Before the night is over, Democrats are going to be fuming mad, slobbering all over the place mad. By not standing, they effectively said that illegal aliens are more important than the safety of American citizens
Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.

I honestly don't know what's sadder, that you posted this, or that you believe it.By not standing, they effectively said that illegal aliens are more important than the safety of American citizens
Face it, if we got rid of every illegal immigrant we would still have a lot of violent crime, just perpetrated by different people. And you really think American citizens would be safer. Please
Re: SOTU
FWEIW, I gave up watching SOTU addresses years ago; one time they were the way that the president outlined his plan to the Congress and the American public, but it just degenerated into a pep rally where the trained monkeys of the president's party would clap wildly, and then people like Liberty would say if you didn't clap, you don't care about Americans or America.
Well Liberty, I care deeply about the future of both, and I venture to suggest I am doing far more to promote the future of both than you are in trying to uphold the rule of law against the policies of those who wildly clap, trying to protect at least some caught up in the idiocy. It certainly beats idiotically giving standing ovations and hurling invective, but you keep doing that to show how much you "care".

Democrats were mad; you could see it in their faces. “Black Hawk Down” Omar looked about ready to grow fangs and start attacking. When the President said what he said, the smart thing for them to have done would have been to stand, fold their arms across their chests, not applaud, and stand only for that one statement; then sit back down. That way they would have been seen as putting the safety of the American people first.
But they couldn’t, because in their meeting they had already decided what their strategy would be and what their response would be. Trump knew this and manipulated them. I don’t know about you, but when someone attempts to manipulate me, it irritates me, and if they succeed, it makes me mad.
But now they are on the record, by their actions, as saying that the safety of the American people is not more important than illegal aliens.
I hope people know me and know that I am not trying to manipulate you or make you mad. I am simply telling you what I perceived.

Re: SOTU
Trump might as well have said, "Stand up and let us know that you support ICE invading democratically run cities and states and that you forgive a few accidental killings of US citizens".
It was an obvious gesture by the writers of his speech to get his maga-people all excited. There was no other reason for him to add "not illegal aliens" to his statement.
If he had only said, "The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens", no one would have any reason to disagree.

Re: SOTU
Taken directly from United States Code, 2011 Edition
Title 5 - GOVERNMENT ORGANIZATION AND EMPLOYEES
PART III - EMPLOYEES
Subpart B - Employment and Retention
CHAPTER 33 - EXAMINATION, SELECTION, AND PLACEMENT
SUBCHAPTER II - OATH OF OFFICESUPP
Sec. 3331 - Oath of office
From the U.S. Government Publishing Office, www.gpo.gov
§3331. Oath of office
An individual, except the President, elected or appointed to an office of honor or profit in the civil service or uniformed services, shall take the following oath: “I, AB, do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.”
(.......emphasis and highlighting mine)
Read that and then show me where it says anything about protecting the public, or illegal aliens, or anything other than SUPPORTING AND DEFENDING THE CONSTITUTION AGAINST ALL ENEMIES, FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC.
And based on this oath, I think a fair argument could be made that the vast majority of Congress has, either through action or inaction, failed to 'well and faithfully discharge their duties'.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Re: SOTU
BB, I agree with your post above. completely. That is why, shortly after Delaware's only Congress critter, (who is also the only member of Congress who is trans and out of the closet) was sworn in, I wrote her a brief letter telling her I had (a faint) hope that she would have the backbone join other congress critters,to take back the powers the constitution gave to the House of Representatives, to declare war and pass a budget.
You described it well--failure to execute their duties. Once Harry Truman said 'the buck stops here. Now it just circulates round as they all just kick it down the road. They all slow it down just enough to scrape off a little for their own pockets as they send it on. Trump just has no shame as he pockets more than any before has ever done.

Re: SOTU
Face it, all that the dems did by not standing and/or cheering was to give the finger to Trump and say they were not going to play his game; and why should they. Nothing to be ashamed of, just showing il duce cannot manipulate them the way he does his followers into doing whatever he says. Or buying his bullshit lines.
And Lib demonstrates that by his post.

Re: SOTU
Lib, you're not an uneducated guy. You write well, and I'm pretty sure you write what you mean. And I'm not being patronizing, just stating an obvious fact.
Nowhere in the constitution does it say that safety of US citizens and people who live here is paramount. I think what we all accept is that any social compact is a compromise: the government (always replaceable by the governed) creates systems (property ownership, contract law, criminal law etc) which are conducive to, but do not guarantee, public order and protection.
Protection of human life is NOT the primary function of government. If it were, we'd have a 1 mph limit on all the interstates. I'm pretty sure the road death rate would come down.
Yes, it is certainly true that some murders and rapes have been committed by illegal immigrants. What is also true is that the vast majority of violent crime is committed by home grown murderers and rapists. The research, some of which I have read, seems to be that illegal immigrants commit far less of this sort of crime than native-born Americans, possibly because (I am speculating here) they tend to keep their heads down for obvious reasons. Every time the president seizes on a citizen like Laken Riley - who was killed by an illegal immigrant - as evidence that we need to take stronger action against the undocumented, it's a lie. A gun-owning Louisianan killed President Kennedy - do we therefore take action against all gun-owning Louisianans?
"By not standing, they effectively said that illegal aliens are more important than the safety of American citizens." No. They said that the idea of America - no kings, freedom of speech, habeas corpus, due process and all the rest - is more important than the life of any American. And although I am not an American, I'll include myself in that group for now.

It’s 30 Days of Oscars and it seems TCM played Gaslight opposite the SOTU.
Bwahahaha!
It was probably a random thing entirely but still funny!

Re: SOTU
Indeed. And because of this the way our government treats illegal aliens in our name, will also affect the way it treats "us", the American citizens. One is not more important than the other and at the end all we really have is the rule of law to protect us. And if we chuck that away, we'll get what we deserve, and it won't be pretty and we will never be safe.No. They said that the idea of America - no kings, freedom of speech, habeas corpus, due process and all the rest - is more important than the life of any American.

Re: SOTU
Recent testimony in congress indicates to me that my local county government gives more screening and training for school crossing guards than ICE gives to new agent hires.
