Nutty Nats ConFLAGration!

Cornish nationalists have launched an internet campaign to have English flags being sold in the run up to the football World Cup removed from shops in the county.

A vast array of goods carrying the Cross of St George have popped up in shops ahead of the tournament which starts in South Africa on June 11.

However, some Cornish nationalists have called for a boycott of stores selling the flags, including Tesco, describing it as a "foreign flag here" which "can be quite insulting to some". They have even launched a campaign of the pages of the social networking site Facebook – under the title of "Get rid of English World Cup flags out of Cornish stores" – although it has so far attracted less than 40 members.

In a statement, Michael Chappell, secretary of the Cornish Branch of the Celtic League, said: "The Cornish branch has received many complaints about the oncoming flood of St George flags into our country and as many point out, this a foreign flag here and can be quite insulting to some.

"I have also received a request from a very well respected Cornish organisation for support in a campaign to have St George's flags removed from certain supermarkets in Cornwall following a string of complaints received by that other organisation from members of the public."

Mr Chappell added: "If Cornwall had its own sport teams, I am sure we would see more of our own flags rather than foreign English ones flying. The English last won the World Cup in 1966, some 44 years ago, and with luck will fall by the wayside early in the competition resulting in ephemeral patriotism (and ditches full of discarded flags)."

Mebyon Kernow (MK), the Party for Cornwall, has three seats on Cornwall Council. Coun Andrew Long, MK councillor for Callington, said he wasn't offended by flags carrying the Cross of St George.

Coun Long said he would not criticise "individuals" for their choice of campaign but said there were "more important things to be dealing with".

"We are not into denigrating anyone," Coun Long said.

"We are a multi-cultural party who believe in respecting other peoples' culture and tradition while encouraging Cornish culture and traditions."

A spokesman for Tesco declined to comment.

Just because they don't want to be part of England doesn't mean that they're not part of England...

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

I thought the Italian Northern League, with their calls for an independent "Padania", were nutcases. Next to these folks....

It's gone national!
But Michael Chappell of the Celtic League said he had received ‘many complaints about the oncoming flood of St George flags’. He added: ‘This is a foreign flag here and can be quite insulting to some. ‘If Cornwall had its own sports teams I am sure we would see more of our own flags [pictured] rather than foreign English ones,’ said Mr Chappell, adding he hoped England would ‘fall by the wayside early in the competition’.

A movement is underway to ban England's flag from stores in Cornwall, where locals who see the town as a Celtic nation have labelled the St George's Cross 'foreign.' Stores across the country have been preparing to display and sell the red and white flags as the World Cup tournament approaches, but locals who see Cornwall as a Celtic nation are pushing for a boycott.

A campaign on social networking site Facebook titled 'Get rid of English World Cup flags out of Cornish stores!!!!' has so far attracted 60 supporters.

CRACKPOT Cornish rebels want to ban England World Cup flags - after branding them FOREIGN.

Shops across the county are stocking up on the red and white St George's Cross flag with the big football tournament less than a month away. But extremists who see Cornwall as a Celtic country in its own right are urging a boycott of stores selling them, including Tesco and the Co-op. They have started a Facebook campaign called "Get rid of English World Cup flags out of Cornish stores," with an image of a St George's Cross on fire.

But shops and pubs planning to screen games called the campaign "ridiculous".

Sonia Peters, of Shirley Cottage Gifts in Newquay, said: "They're making a big fuss about nothing. If people want to buy an England flag for the World Cup they should be able to." Christina Smith, of St Austell's Britannia Inn, added: "Cornwall is part of England. It's not a separate country."

Ooops! :)
Nationalist call to boycott St George's flag backfires

Chief Reporter

Cornish nationalists calling for a ban on the sale of English flags before the football World Cup scored a spectacular own goal when their Internet campaign was hijacked by supporters of the Cross of St George.

The campaign was launched in responses to the red and white goods which have cropped up in stores around the country ahead of the tournament which starts next month.

Some Cornish nationalists called for a boycott of stores selling the flags, including Tesco, describing it as a "foreign flag here" which "can be quite insulting to some".

Their site on the social networking site Facebook – under the title of "Get rid of English World Cup flags out of Cornish stores" and depicting a Cross of St George on fire – had generated little interest.

However, it has now been taken over by supporters of the English flag and attracted some vitriolic abuse littered with Anglo Saxon expletives.

"How dare you boycott our national flag," one wrote. "I'm English through and through and am proud to fly our flag. How is it that we are the only country who are not allowed to fly our flag without it being politically incorrect?

"I've been to Cornwall a few times and think that it is a beautiful place. I'm disgusted. How would you like it if we came to Cornwall and set fire to your flag?"

Another wrote: "Cornwall's a lovely place, I visit there quite often. Let's see how you'd get on without the funding you receive as being part of England, thus part of Britain and thus part of Europe.

"There are only about 70 of you in your group."

The fevered response to the Cornish website also spawned another campaign page titled "Boycott Cornwall this summer until they accept the English flag" which has attracted more than 90 members.
