I guess Biden's not pro-choice afterall

Post by Liberty1 »

"You have no safety net. Your policy has been one which I fully understand -- I'm not second-guessing -- of one child per family," Biden said, according to the official transcript of the event. "The result being that you're in a position where one wage earner will be taking care of four retired people. Not sustainable."

Conservative groups, and at least one GOP presidential candidate, slammed the vice president for the remark.

"Really, Mr. Vice President? You're not second-guessing a policy that has resulted in untold numbers of forced abortions, forced sterilizations, outrageous fines or even jail time for families that dare to defy the law, and a gender imbalance crisis?" the Susan B. Anthony List said on its blog.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, a leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, called China's policy "gruesome and barbaric" and questioned how Biden could have given it a pass.

"Vice President Biden's acquiescence to such a policy should shock the conscience of every American. Instead of condoning the policy, Vice President Biden should have condemned it in the strongest possible terms," he said in a statement.

Penny Nance, CEO of Concerned Women for America, said in a written statement that Biden's comment "crosses the lines of ignorant and wrong."

Well, his math is off, for one thing. If each pair of parents has one child that would be one wage earner taking care of every two retired people, assuming both spouses work, which I believe is as commonplace in China as it is anywhere else these days.

It's interesting how people can take statements out of context and turn them into whatever they would like them to mean.

For example; VP Biden, while speaking to a group in China says to the Chinese that he understands their 'one child policy.'

This, of course, means that Biden is for aborting fetuses of any mother who gets pregnant after having her first child. Further, if that mother somehow has a 2nd child, he would support its execution, and would require severe punishment of both parents for disobeying China's law. Not to mention that President Obama told Biden to say that on the same day he confessed to him that he is not an American citizen and is hoping to destroy this country.

What his statement must not be interpreted to mean is that Biden was making a comparison between our two country's problems with not being able to care for senior citizens over the long term. And that understanding China's policy doesn't mean that you support it.

In other words, it's not the point that Vice President Biden is making, it is what others who hate our current administration would like him to be saying so they can criticize him for it.

Nothing new.

As have all of the Republicans who have never uttered a word in condemnation of the one child policy until now. Including you.

Hypocrites all.

Well it's certainly not been a huge political topic, but I've periodically heard condemnation for years from various Reps.

From any of the crowd that have seen fit to lift their leg about it now?

It is going to be interesting to see how the one-child policy works out over the next couple of decades, and whether the predictions of major problems comes to pass.

He says that he understands the policy, thats good, it's better to talk about things that you understand, and its unsustainable.

Sounds to me like he is being critical of the policy, not 'giving it a pass'.

What moron would call that "giving it a pass"?

Bush ushered China into the WTO weeks after they knocked down our aircraft and kidnapped the crew, "one child" policy and all.

We would have to keep in mind the outcome of no 'one child' policy; a China with 2-3 billion people all of whom aspire to the std of living we have, with the resource use and pollution that goes with it.

If he is assuming 1 wage earner per couple then he's right. I don't know if that assumption is reasonable in China; it seems unlikely.
