I think the republican's biggest problem is that they learned from the GWB years that having a likeable dolt as your leader is not sufficient for a presidency.

So this time they put up an unlikeable dolt instead....

In fairness, they didn't exactly have a lot of choice. Who would have been better?

Batshit Bachmann?
A man whose name brings up more references to sexual fluids than to him?
A serial adulterer who wanted to colonize the moon?
Brokeback Perry?

Mittens at least had the advantage of being sane and reasonably unoffensive.

Lord Jim wrote:Y'know the liberal media and Team Obama are trying portray the video from that fundraising dinner as some sort of "window into the Real Romney"....

I don't think that's fair or accurate....

I think what was going on there is pretty much as McCormack described it...

It was an example of Romney doing in private what he frequently does in public....

Trying to ingratiate himself to his audience by telling them what he thinks they want to hear....
Except...except...Romney was speaking in the Boca Raton home of private equity fund manager Marc Leder. In other words, he was with people like himself, among whom there was no need to put up a false front.

This is from the blog "Stonekettle Station" by retired US Navy Chief Warrant Officer Jim Wright (follow this link to read the rest of what he has to say):
When they’re among their friends and cronies and when they think they’re alone with people just like themselves, when they think nobody can hear, well then you find out exactly what they’re made of, don’t you?
"…There are forty-seven percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are forty-seven percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you name it – that that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what. These are people who pay no income tax. [M]y job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
The true test of character is how a person acts when they think nobody is watching.

And here, ultimately, is what Mitt Romney thinks of nearly half of his fellow Americans.

It’s been 24 hours since Mother Jones broke the news and published Mitt Romney’s comments before his rich white friends when he thought nobody was looking.

Every pundit and politician and news outlet in the country has torn this statement apart today. I have a few observations to add.

Romney was speaking at a fund raising party in the Boca Raton home of private equity fund manager, Marc Leder. Despite the claims of conspiracy nuts, there is no disputing that it was Romney. There’s no disputing exactly what he said, or exactly how he meant it when he thought it was “just us rich white folk.” Mitt himself admits as much and says that he stands by his comments – even if he could have said it better.

Mr Magic Underpants is sane?!?!?

How do the parties choose who goes on the ballot for the dog and pony show?

You "read heard somewhere" but were too lazy to check facts? Or didn't care about facts only your emotional reactions?

85% graduated from High School overall, not compatible with either of your numbers. 80% of blacks.

Try to check facts?

Yeah, I know that's the Demo party spin line....

But when it comes to putting up a false front, since when has Romney needed a reason?

Plus he wasn't really with people "like him" in that they were all undoubtedly much more reliably conservative than he.

I think it's pretty obvious he was trying to impress them.

LMAO...

Coming from a guy who has never checked a fact in his life, just regurgitates anything he finds from one of the two or three sources that serve as his unquestioned pipeline to reality...

Hey rube, what happened to "fact checking" before you posted this:
Clinton raised the top rate to 34% and capital gains were taxed as regular income (which they should be) and the deficit disappeared.
Accusing somebody else of being "too lazy to check facts"....

What a card!

Of the candidates that ran, I have to say that Romney was the class of the field....

Which says more about the field than it does about Romney....(The last time around in 2008 he was the least desirable candidate in the field....)

At one time I'd had some hope for Rick Perry, but then he got in the race and in short order proved himself to be a complete chucklehead.....

Rick Santorum could have been a formidable candidate if he had run the right sort of campaign, but for whatever reason he just didn't have the discipline to be able to do that....

Gingrich would have been a complete disaster; we'd have lost 40 states with someone as unappealing as him at the top of the ticket....

So yeah, of what was available he was the best we had....

I think Jeb Bush took a pass because he thought it was too soon after his brother, and that if he got the nomination the Obama people would have just hammered away at the theme of Jeb representing a return to George...

But I think he miscalculated...

Sure they would have tried to do that, but they're doing it to Romney anyway, and over the course of the campaign he has the gravitas to have over come that. Precisely because he is his brother, nobody would expect him to denounce him or hold it against him for not doing so; (except of course people who would never vote for him anyway) and he never held any role in the Bush Administration.

Instead, he was compiling his own very successful record as Governor of a major, (and electorally critical) state. To this day polls show that he remains the most popular political figure in the state. (We certainly wouldn't be biting our nails over carrying Florida with him at the head of the ticket)

On top of that Jeb absolutely doesn't come across in any way shape or form like George...

He doesn't look like him, he doesn't sound like him, he doesn't have any of the same body language, (in fact I think Rick Perry would have had more of a problem reminding people of George than Jeb would have) and he's sure a helluvalot more articulate and intelligent sounding than George....

I know another concern he had was how far would he have to go to satisfy some of the yahoo elements currently active in the party to secure the nomination, but again, because of his own unquestionable conservative credentials, I think he would have had a lot more freedom of movement with that faction than Romney has had...

I also think Jeb expected the economy to be in better shape by now, (as did a lot of folks) and didn't realize just how vulnerable Obama would be....

Yeah, I really think Jeb missed a bet, but that's water under the bridge now....

LongRun, you're right, my decimal place got misplaced. ;P

But that's okay; think of the advantage of selling a house that has no electric bill. There is no maintenance on the panels, other than blowing leaves off them if the wind doesn't do it for us.
Until you need a new roof. :o
No more subsidies or if there are they are so small now-a-days as to not make it worth it. My mortgage will be paid off in 4 years or less (I forget) and I am ovoiding any more interest payments. (only one I have is the mortgage and that is minimal now, mostly principal)

I hear stuff on the radio (1010 wins, 880cbs is what I usually listen to) and when I get home, no I don't start searching the internet for the "facts" (we all know how everything on the internet, or radio, is true). I have a life. I go home, eat dinner, converse with my wife and daughter (son has moved out Yippee!!!!) maybe do some work around the house, go to an AA meeting, come home and talk with the wife some more.

But checking in on the NYcity school disticts, they had some charts and it showed 5 years ago, black grad rates after 4 years was around 50% and now it's at 60-70%. To me that is still crazy. 30-40% don't have a HS diploma?
