Care to update, Crackpot?

Judging by job want ads and things of that nature aroud here, the recession has not yet bottomed out. 99 weeks unemployment has been a disastrous, expensive, counterproductive mistake.

The problem of having a Congress made up mainly of people who have never actually worked for a living is that they have no idea what it's like to be on unemployment or to actually NEED a paycheck. They make policies that they think are compassionate (failing to realize that being compassionate with OPM is NOT a good thing), and simply do things that are stupid.

It's not that long ago that the Unemployment Office demanded that you GET A JOB. They would send you out on interviews, and want to know what companies you had contacted during the precedng two weeks. If you turned down ANY job, or didn't give them a reasonable number of companies you had contacted, they cut you off. All reasonable. What do you think our unemployment rate would be today if those policies had been maintained? I garontee it wouldn't be any where near 10%

When I got layed off and went on unemployment, they kept track of the contacts and interviews I went on. As it turned out, I only collected for three weeks.

The world would be a paradise if only we treated people with more cruelty, wouldn't it?

Now there's a nice, reasonable perspective for ya. It is "cruel" to insist that people on the dole try to get a job.

What a maroon.

The "Dole"; unemployment insurance, which is paid into by all employees through weekly pay deductions is the "Dole"? And I guess if I have an accident with my car and use my insurance to fix it that's the "Dole" as well?

But that aisde, I think the "cruelty" comes from this idea of taking ANY job; you know, so Dr. X, we know you're a skilled cardiovascular surgeon and would like to look for a job in your field, but if you don't take this job pumping septic tanks (at minimum wage) you're going to lose your unemployment compensation--you know, the charity the state is extending to you, even though you paid into it for years. And yes, we realize that when you take this job you won't be able to look for job in your field because there's no time off for you to interview, but too damn bad--if you were any good you wouldn't be unemployed.

As someone who is soon to be joining the ranks of the enemployed (due to a damn merger), I've looked into unemployment insurance and oldr is right, you have to make a reasonable effort to get a job in your field; the idea of forcing someone to take ANY job is both offensive and cruel.

Sorry to hear that BigRR. Been through it, it sucks. PM me if you need any advice or just need someone to listen.

Thanks Oldr; I knew it was coming for a long time and I am fairly prepared for it--I would have preferred it not be in the midst of a recession/jobless recovery, but I'll be fine. The severance give me enough time to consider my options and move forward intelligently. Actually, between remaining with ne w company (and its policies) and this, I believe I am one of the lucky ones.

The strange thing is that I've worked pretty much for over 40 years (including part time work in school), so in a way I'm looking forward to this.

It's not bad at first, but I got bored after a while. There is only so much job searching you can do each day. Guess we'll see you Plan B more often.
Aren't you in New Jersey? NJ's unemployment package is better than NY's, something like $500+ vs $400+. That and they take out taxes from it.

Yeah, I'm in NJ, but I work in NY, so I get their unemployment plan.

As for "bored", the ski season is almost upon us and I may get a pass at a nearby mountain; as you said, you can only searc for so long.

BigRR, sounds like you will be fine. Enjoy the ski season! If you need legal connections in NY/NJ I have only a very few but would be happy to offer them up if its helpful. You know how to reach me.

My cousin has just the opposite, she lives in NY but worked in NJ so she got the better package. She's been out of work for about 9 months now. She has a PhD in Psycology but I have no idea what she did at her old job.

Hopefully we'll get a good amount of snow for you.

Good Luck RR hopefully things are improving there as much as they are now. (the auto industry is actually expanding again saving plants that were slated to close and adding new shifts and jobs)

As for me I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop. This job is going way too good for me. relaxed atmosphere, not alot of mettings being called just to stress the callers importance, being empowered to assign your own work. I really can't complain and that is really beginning to worry me.
