At its core, marriage is a civil contract enforceable 9and dissolvable, according to the civil law.
I agree except for; let the gov be the "civil contract" end of it and "marriage" be the religious end of it.

Why? There's nothing inherently religious about marriage. It's probably the oldest form of formal civil contract in the Western world and is many thousands of years older than Christianity, which dressed it up as a "sacrament" for members of the cult.

Hours Before Big Rally, Judge Orders Kim Davis Released

Just hours before a big rally to call for Kim Davis' release, a federal judge has ordered that she be released from jail.

Judge David L. Bunning also ordered Davis not to interfere when her deputy clerks issue marriage licenses.

Bunning, who held Davis in contempt and ordered her into custody, said he was satisfied that the Rowan County Clerk's Office is now complying with a Supreme Court decision that made same-sex marriage legal in all the United States.

As we reported, a deputy clerk has been issuing marriage licenses to both opposite-sex and same-sex couples since Davis was sent to jail. Citing her religious beliefs, Davis had defied the Supreme Court since June by refusing to issue licenses.

Bunning did not order Davis to begin signing off on the licenses. Instead, he simply told her not to try to stop — "directly or indirectly" — licenses from being issued.

The licenses being issued do not have Davis' name on them. Davis' attorneys have argued that they are invalid.

"If Defendant Davis should interfere in any way with their issuance, that will be considered a violation of this Order and appropriate sanctions will be considered," Bunning wrote in his order.

Bunning has also asked Davis' deputy clerks to issue a status report every 14 days that details their compliance with his orders.

Bunning's order comes just hours before a huge rally was scheduled.

GOP presidential candidates Mike Huckabee and Ted Cruz are scheduled to attend the rally in front of the Carter County Detention Center in Grayson, Ky.

Television images showed a large group of supporters assembled in front of the building, awaiting Davis' release.

I wonder if Bunning has gotten some sort of assurance from Davis that she won't order her staff to stop issuing marriage licenses...

His order certainly doesn't indicate that he has...

If not, her freedom could be short lived...

Member of the band Survivor have lashed out at anti-marriage equality court clerk Kim Davis over the unauthorised use of their iconic song Eye of The Tiger at a rally to celebrate her release from jail.

In a widely circulated video clip, Davis, who has become a darling of the extreme religious right in the US after refusing to issue marriage licences to same-sex couples, appears in Kentucky on a podium with presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee accompanied by the band's 1982 hit.

Davis had been jailed for five days for contempt of court over her refusal to issue the licences.

Jim Peterik, who co-wrote the anthem, told Billboard Davis did not have permission to use Eye of the Tiger and banned her from doing so in future.

"I was very surprised and dismayed at the misuse of the song I co-wrote with Frankie Sullivan for Rocky lll," he said. "The song has motivated thousands through the years to reach beyond their limits. Its use for the release of Kim Davis does not support my views or my politics. I have contacted my publishers to make sure this usage is stopped immediately."

Peterik reinforced his anger via Twitter.

Survivor co-founder Frankie Sullivan also took issue with the unauthorised use of the song on his Facebook page.

Eye of the Tiger was a game-changer for Survivor after it was heavily featured in Rocky III. It was in the opening and closing credits and incorporated into a training sequence. It was also nominated for a Grammy and was the only element of Rocky III nominated for an Academy Award. The single eventually sold more than 30 million copies, and pushed the eponymous LP to No. 2.

The song went on to be used in other films, TV shows, singing contests, video games and a Starbucks commercial. Sullivan sued Newt Gingrich in 2012 when the Republican used the song in his presidential campaign.

In his 2014 memoir, Through the Eye of theTiger, Peterik said the song had "helped people rise from wheelchairs and walk".

"What amazes me most is that this song remains alive and well - stronger, it seems with every passing year," he wrote. "It continues to be a thread in the fabric of millions of lives and it has motivated so many to go beyond their perceived limitations and achieve more than they ever could imagine."

Similarly...
R.E.M. bashes Trump, Cruz for using 'It's the End of the World' at rally
"Go fuck yourselves, the lot of you -- you sad, attention-grabbing, power-hungry little men," Stipe said in an email to The Daily Beast. "Do not use our music or my voice for your moronic charade of a campaign."
The band's post on Facebook was slightly more diplomatic:
"While we do not authorize or condone the use of our music at this political event, and do ask that these candidates cease and desist from doing so, let us remember that there are things of greater importance at stake here," R.E.M. said.
[ ... ]
In June, Trump used Neil Young's "Rockin' In The Free World" on the campaign trail -- much to the dismay of the rock legend.

"Donald Trump was not authorized to use 'Rockin' In The Free World' in his presidential candidacy announcement," Young's management company said in a statement. "Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for President of the United States of America."
You know, when the people you have chosen to be, in effect, your musical spokesmen, conveying what you see as the mood and emotions you want to project on a particular occasion...when those people are telling you to cease and desist and GO FUCK YOURSELVES, you might want to rethink the actual verbal message coming out of your mouth just a little bit?

Here's something relevant to this thread. I found it on Jim Wright's (Stonekettle Station) Facebook page.
Desmond Thomas Doss (February 7, 1919 – March 23, 2006) was an Army medic in WWII.

He was also a Seventh Day Adventist and as such, a conscientious objector who refused to take up arms due to his religious conviction.

Doss was drafted in April of 1942. Rather than refuse service, he instead chose to become a medic. After training he was eventually assigned to the Medical Detachment, 307th Infantry, 77th Infantry Division and sent to the Pacific theater.

At first, Doss was harassed and belittled for his beliefs and for his refusal to fight. But in a very short time he earned the respect and undying gratitude of his fellows by risking his own life repeatedly to save theirs. Doss was wounded THREE TIMES saving the lives of his comrades. He contracted tuberculosis while in the warzone and spent five years after the war in a hospital recovering from the disease and his injuries. He died at the age of 87, in 2006.

He was awarded the Medal of Honor, the nation's highest decoration, for bravery and courage under fire - despite never having fired a single shot. He was also awarded two Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts.

THAT, that right there, is how you strike a compromise between your religious beliefs and your sworn duty. Doss didn't try to impose his beliefs on his fellow soldiers. He didn't withhold his medical duties from those who didn't believe as he did. Instead he did his job with great courage and selfless dedication and at the risk of his own life - and immortal soul, if you believe in that sort of thing.

That's what an ACTUAL HERO LOOKS LIKE.

Kim Davis is none of those things.
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

I particularly liked Salman Rushdie's take during this Bill Maher segment:
One of the things that is a classic trope of the religious bigots is while they are denying people their rights, they claim that their rights are being denied, while they are persecuting people, they claim to be persecuted, while they are behaving colossally offensively, they claim to be the offended party; it's an upside down world.
Could you imagine any other public servant who insists on the right to collect a paycheque for not doing her job, being so warmly embraced by every high profile Republican imaginable? The GOP might as well rebrand itself as the Religious Nutcases and Froot Loops Party.

A Kentucky clerk who was jailed for refusing to issue marriage licences to gay couples has said she will not block the process but her name will not appear on the paperwork.

However, Kim Davis questioned on Monday whether licences without her signature would be valid.

Ms Davis, an elected official, has said that her Christian faith should exempt her from signing the licences.

The US Supreme Court declared gay marriage legal in June.

"I don't want to have this conflict. I don't want to be in the spotlight. And I certainly don't want to be a whipping post," Ms Davis said. "I am no hero. I'm just a person that's been transformed by the grace of God, who wants to work, be with my family. I just want to serve my neighbours quietly without violating my conscience."

Shortly after Ms Davis addressed reporters, a deputy clerk issued a marriage licence to a lesbian couple without incident.

Despite Ms Davis' claims, several Kentucky officials including the governor said the recently issued licences are valid.
