The irony of all this, of course, is that the Supremes largely handed 2000 to GW Bush (that masterful statesman in the rearview mirror) on the basis of the Equal Protection clause of the constitution. The proposed recounts, mooted in order to figure out what had actually happened, were held to violate the 14th amendment because the voters would not be treated equally. How is the wholly unequal value of an electoral vote from state to state possibly constitutional? Answer, of course, is that it is, because it's in the constitution. Time for a retool.

Gays can be reformed, just like arsonists, Trump’s new domestic policy adviser has said

Ken Blackwell, tapped last week by President-elect Donald Trump to head domestic policy during the businessman's transition to the White House, has made anti-LGBT statements for years. Among them: Homosexuality is a sin, and gay people, just like petty thieves and fire-setters, can be rehabilitated.

The Ohio politician has long endorsed a controversial mental health practice known as conversion therapy or reparative therapy. The goal is to cure a person of his or her homosexuality, and in the case of transgender people, to reaffirm the gender into which they were born.

In the past, treatments have included inducing vomiting and using mild electric shock while patients viewed homoerotic images. Since the 1990s, however, the therapy has been denounced by many medical and scientific societies and even outlawed in a handful of states. In 2015, the Obama administration expressed disapproval of the practice after Leelah Alcorn, a 17-year-old transgender teen, took her life in Ohio after being forced by her parents to undergo conversion counseling.

While Blackwell will be overseeing a wide swath of domestic issues facing the new administration, one big question facing the LGBT community is whether a Trump administration will promote the discredited therapy.

Two years ago, in a radio interview with Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council, which has been deemed a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Blackwell appeared to blame the deaths of six individuals in a 2014 mass shooting in Isla Vista, Calif., on the LGBT rights movement, saying it undermined "natural marriage."

"When these fundamental institutions are attacked and destroyed and weakened and abandoned," said Blackwell, a senior fellow at the Family Research Council, "you get what we are now seeing, and that is a flood of these disturbed people in our society that are causing great pain."

In an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid in 2006, the former Ohio secretary of state claimed that being gay was a “choice” that could be “changed.”

“I think it's a transgression against God's law,” he told the Columbus Dispatch at the time. “And I think you make good choices and bad choices in terms of lifestyle. Our expectation is that one's genetic makeup might make one more inclined to be an arsonist or might make one more inclined to be a kleptomaniac. Do I think they can be changed? Yes.”

Can we expect "re-education camps" that use shock treatments and inducing vomiting to "cure" people of their gayness?

The "Night of the Long Knives" (the period between June 30 and July 2, 1934) was a purge, but not necessarily of LGBTQ persons.  It was when Hitler, acting through his SS (Schutzstaffel) and Gestapo (secret police), arrested and/or summarily executed many of the leaders of the Nazi's own SA or Sturmabteilung — better known as the "Brownshirts", the paramilitary group that aided Hitler's original rise to power — in effect, cutting off its head and rendered it powerless in order to better consolidate his hold on absolute power in Germany.

Equality House Defaced With Slurs, Bullets



Equality House is under attack.

The rainbow-painted house — a symbol of LGBT pride located across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka Kan. — has been targeted multiple times in recent weeks, according to its founder, Aaron Jackson.

Jackson, whose nonprofit organization Planting Peace purchased the property in 2013 and transformed it into an outpost of hope, reported in a Facebook post Tuesday that his life was threatened by members of the Ku Klux Klan and the house's free library had been "covered in feces."

Alarmingly, Jackson also detailed how five white men spraypainted the words "fuk [sic] fags" on the house's facade. The vandals also shot at the property, leaving seven bullet holes in a window.

Jackson reported the incidents to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which confirmed that hate crimes have spiked in the wake of the presidential election. This is the first time Equality House has experienced attacks since its founding.

In response to these incidents, Jackson urged action to the LGBT community and its allies.

"But what scares me more than the bullets nailing my window and swastikas popping up on street corners around America is the absolute silence from far to many. This is no time to be complacent my friends. We must act," he wrote.

My (white, non-Hispanic, 39-year-old) daughter told my wife and me that she was raking leaves in her front yard in Battle Creek, Michigan, one day this past week when her phone (in her pocket) rang; she stopped raking and answered and proceeded to stand there in her front yard, chatting away, with the phone in one hand and the rake in the other....when a complete stranger driving down the street rolled his window down and yelled at her "HEY, GET OFF THE PHONE AND GET BACK TO WORK, YA LAZY MEXICAN!"
