The UKIP effect
Re: The UKIP effect
Farage has carefully and cleverly positioned his party to exploit exactly those areas where the Conservatives and Labourites are weakest with large portions of their own constituencies. (And he's also been extremely mindful of the need to do this while avoiding the blatantly racist appeals of bully boy groups like the BNP that scare and turn off many voters...)

Re: The UKIP effect
UKIP - an unfortunate name given that in the UK it means "you sleep"

Here's a link to an excellent profile and interview with Farage in this week's Newsweek:

Here's one bit:

Here's one bit:
If history suggests that the ability to inspire hatred can be a perverse indicator of greatness in a politician, then who knows what heights Nigel Farage might scale? How many of us could really be driven to fury by such figures as Ed Miliband, David Cameron, or poor bewildered Nick Clegg? These are men who, I suggest to Farage, might have collaborated to develop a homogenised image you could brand as SBW: Smart Boy Wanted.
“They are appalling people, truly appalling,” Farage says, of his fellow party leaders. “Every one of them is as dull as bloody ditchwater. These men are thoroughly hopeless.”
“By what definition?”
“I judge everybody on the Farage Test. Number one, would I employ them? Number two, would I go for a drink with them?”

The "beer test" is infallible.Lord Jim wrote:“I judge everybody on the Farage Test. Number one, would I employ them? Number two, would I go for a drink with them?”[/b]
However, Farage forgot the Welsh amendment;
"Would I end up punching him in the face at the end of the evening"
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”

Re: The UKIP effect
What ever else you want to say about Farage, he is one of the two most charismatic, compelling, and colorful political figures in British politics today...
(And we all know who the other one is...
)
And it ain't Cameron, Milliband or Clegg...
That trio look like three oh-so-smug frat boys...

Re: The UKIP effect
Mr. Cameron is a well meaning sort, like Henry Collingridge in the original House Of Cards......
"A well meaning fool, with no background and no bottom..."

Re: The UKIP effect
That wasn't entirely fair...Without whom they can't possibly win elections; there aren't enough lefty college professors and celebrities to carry a single constituency...
In addition to lefty college professors and celebrities, even without the working class, Labour can also count on the middle class civil servants and the work shy bone idle dole dependents to be in their corner...
(Of course depending on the work-shy, bone idle, dole dependent types to provide the margin of victory can be problematic... Just ask the Scottish Nationalists...
