Amnesty Don
Re: Amnesty Don
One of the greatest pleasures of my new simple life is that there is an authentic (and I've lived on the border so I know what I speak of) Mexican restaurant in my town that I can visit monthly.
There's also a great Thai place a short drive from my house. Can we somehow get a pad Thai wagon on every corner, too?
I am not at all concerned by the prospect of Mexican culture inundating the USA; great food, great music, great tequila, beautiful people. Loved my time in Yuma/Algodones, except the crazy heat.
I think having a taco/tamale truck next to every Dunkin Donuts in Massachusetts would be a great thing. Make America (More) Great!

I'm not a fan of food trucks generally, no matter what their cuisine (except for the dirty water hot dogs), but they are becoming increasingly popular (and even serve some very good food I'm led to believe) and I can't think taco trucks are any worse than the other food trucks. Personally, I'd be happy to see more authentic Mexican restaurants (not the margarita we usually see around here) and maybe more taco trucks could lead to that. I just can't see anything bad about more taco trucks. As for the invasion of Mexican culture, what immigrant group hasn't been accused of invading and threatening America as we know it (and which of those groups lived up to the xenophobic predictions)?

Re: Amnesty Don
With the fall Oktoberfest season coming up, we need to resolve the burning controversary of "with or without sauerkraut" on a bratwurst before we start dealing with authentic vs. Americanized tacos.Lord Jim wrote:If illegal immigration is going to produce a taco truck on every corner, I may have to re-think my position on the issue...
And of course, it is *WITH* kraut. Anyone who says otherwise is an uncivilized, uncultured Philistine who probably also thinks that 'La Choy dinners' are the closest thing to authentic Chinese cuisine you can get without actually going to Beijing.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
Re: Amnesty Don
I just visited a friend in south end Fall River and was thinking about this immigration issue as I was surrounded by nothing but Portuguese markets and eateries. ALL cultures that come here bring great food. WTF is wrong with that?! Best thing about America!

Grew up on bratwurst and yes, it must have sauerkraut with it!

I am not a fan of sauerkraut (and I am 95% German). Spicy mustard on bratwurst is all I require. And it should be on rye bread or a rye roll.
And I prefer burritos over tacos.
They stay together better.

I'm all for sangria law, and bratwurst without kraut (but with good mustard). The more senior members of my German/Austrian family put their sauerkraut over their mashed potatoes, then put gravy on top of that. We younger generation barely even eat it (my sister and one of our cousins do - I will take a bite for traditions sake but that's it).

Sauerkraut, if one can learn to enjoy it, is excellent for the gut. Like all fermented foods, it makes gut flora happy and thus aids with digestion and overall health.
