Maybe it's more the size than the speed, but I have seen some chippers that have the power to shred fairly large tree branches very quickly.
As an aside, when I was an undergrad I did a research project that involved animals (mainly rats, mice, and rabbits); one thing we did was to assay then entire mouse body for a particular analyte--for certain reasons it had to be performed on a live mouse and it had to be fast. We had a high speed blender into which the mouse was deposited that prepared a homogenate (that's the nicest term I could think of for it) in seconds. IMHO, not enough time for any pain. I would think we could do the same on a larger scale for people (not that I condone capital punishment).

I've blended and microwaved mice before, but only after they were killed (and then for purposes of feeding other critters). Ugh -- no way I could have done it to the live ones. I leave the area when my Swede is cooking lobsters, I can't stand hearing them clanging around in the pot (and yes, I have done it myself, I prefer not to).

Re: Emanuel AME massacre trial
It's not something I recall too fondly; it was just something that needed to be done for the project (and while I won't go into details, trust me, it was not the worst task).
As for microwaving, we used to he up dead mice for a boa constrictor in the lab; we use to have to push the heated body with a pencil or something else to make it move and seem alive or the snake would ignore it.

For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.
