My maternal ancestors came here on the Mayflower nearly 400 years ago, my paternal ancestors through Ellis Island in the late 1880s - and yes, my family is an immigrant family.

All Americans are immigrants IMHO, except those whose ancestry dates back thousands of years and can reasonably call themselves indigenous - even if they at one time originated elsewhere on the planet.

Just listened to Matteo Salvini on the radio, He says he wants to deport 90% of immigrants from Italy. He said less than 10% of the people who have come to Italy are genuine refugees. Viktor Orban is openly hostile to the EU over mass immigration. Hungary is now threatened with Article 7. Sweden for the first time in their history have a right wing party in government, Brexit is in the main due to mass immigration and who thought after 1945 that a right wing party would ever see the inside of the Bundestag again?

So just telling people, "you are sounding Trumpist" or pointing out that the USA has home grown neo-Nazis, isn't really going to advance the debate is it?

No, but it does illustrate the danger and the proliferation of crazies throughout the world. It clearly is a problem that must be dealt with, but alerting people to the rise of this sort of politicians and their rabid fans deserves to be mentioned, and might even help to get people involved in the talks to reach rational solutions. If it doesn't, I think we know what is likely to happen next.

It’s the result of the left ignoring and or writing off large portions of the electorate. When too many people are rendered voiceless for too long they will take anything that speaks to them even if it is wrapped in xenophobia and racism.

The irony is the left is supposed to embody populism but they have spent so much time and effort making sure their net encompasses the furthest fringes that they’ve developed a gaping hole in the middle.

Hell nowadays most progressive buzzwords nowadays seem to be chosen on the basis that while being technically accurate seem to primarily serve to alienate others. ( see “white privedge” and “toxic masculinity”)

There it is again, a prime example few why we are in this position. Calling people who are pissed off with what is happening to their countries, cultures, and homes, "crazies" is what gave rise to this problem.

well gob, if that's what you see by the comments that this is happening in the US as well and comparisons to Trump and his supporters, I can understand your point. But I think it connotes more, including a need to examine why so many are embracing these views and what can be done. IMHO this is a growing concern that must be addressed; I agree name calling doesn't work, but then neither IMHO does playing to their fears rather than openly discussing them.

And yet you can’t understand that caracature is representative of that exact same phenomenon going in the other direction. :nana

Watch Active Measures; then ask, how many of these right wing folks are sincerely committed, versus how many are useful idiots?

Also, ask which side is really "refusing to integrate"?
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.
