Trump on Juneteenth: 'Nobody had ever heard of it'
There are a handful of phrases Donald Trump uses when describing things he's recently learned, but which many others were already well aware of. For example, the president is clearly a big fan of "A lot of people don't know that" -- a phrase he uses to effectively say, "I recently learned some new detail, and since I wasn't aware of it, I'm going to assume most people didn't know it, either."
Trump also has a long track record of throwing around its rhetorical cousin: "People don't realize." He tends to apply the phrase to things plenty of people did realize, but which only recently came to his attention.
And there's the third unfortunate phrase of the trio: "Nobody had ever heard of" something.
The president has argued, for example, that "nobody ever heard of" Osama bin Laden before Trump referenced him in a book. On the campaign trail in 2016, the Republican also claimed that "nobody ever heard of" presidential executive orders before Barack Obama took office. (Both claims are ridiculously false.)
And when speaking with the Wall Street Journal yesterday, Trump used the phrase again when speaking about Juneteenth, which honors the end of slavery in the United States. Referencing his decision to delay a scheduled campaign rally in Tulsa, the president was a little too eager to pat himself on the back.
"I did something good: I made Juneteenth very famous," Mr. Trump said, referring to news coverage of the rally date. "It's actually an important event, an important time. But nobody had ever heard of it."
The article added that it was at roughly this point in the interview that Trump paused to ask an aide if she'd heard of Juneteenth. She replied that the White House had issued an official statement commemorating the day each year of his presidency.
"Oh really? We put out a statement? The Trump White House put out a statement?" Trump said. "Ok, ok. Good."
To the extent that reality still has any meaning, Donald Trump was not personally responsible for making Juneteenth "famous." It's been recognized in most states for many years.
As for the idea that "nobody had ever heard of it," just because the president didn't know what it was before last week doesn't mean the rest of us were equally lost.

I admit to coming to a knowledge of Juneteenth quite late in life, but I fault my education because I’m a lefty treehugging whatever and have been reading about civil rights and the black experience in America for many years, since watching Roots in grade school and reading it afterward, but never came across a discussion of Juneteenth. I learned about it from a boss in legal aid who was African American and we celebrated it in our office - that was 2005? I know a lot of very progressive people who didn’t know about Juneteenth until fairly recently because it’s one of those things that has only recently been mainstreamed into history curriculum so unless you’ve read Zinn’s People’s History or taken African American Studies courses, you could be very lefty and not know about it.
To clarify, most of us were well aware that slaves continued to be kept in slavery in southern states after Emancipation until Union troops freed them after the end of the war of rebellion - but the celebration of that event in Texas that is Juneteenth, not so common knowledge until recently.

Most of the black citizens with whom I work never heard of it. I worked with a group who did know of it and have been aware for more than a decade. Those that I work with now black or white never heard of it. I have no explanation for why some blacks are adamant over celebration and others do not. There is no social and economic differences in the ones who do and the ones who do not.

Oh and I cannot believe Wes has the balls to show up here after his last stunt. I for one am quite ready to cast a vote to kick his ass off the island.

I learned about Juneteenth -- and Greenwood, for that matter -- while studying Black history back in the mid '80s.
Knowing what I know I have no argument with the current BLM revolution. I'm no fan of violence but sometimes it's necessary to get the tone deaf to start listening. I do not condone the practice, but I do understand it.

Now, now scooter, this is for the man who discovered Juneteenth; that enthusiasm would not have to be faked.
Re: Don't Forget to Take Your Hydroxychloroquine First
For the record, Snopes says that whether this is really connected to the rally is "unproven", because it was taken down before they could investigate where it came from.

FWIW https://www.kjrh.com/news/local-news/cr ... y-facebookTULSA — A Craigslist ad circulating social media asks for minority actors or actresses to hold signs at an event in Tulsa on June 20.
Although the ad doesn't mention President Trump, the map marks the location of the BOK Center where Trump's Tulsa rally is taking place. The rally is June 20.
Shares of the post imply the ad is seeking people to attend the rally OR people to protest outside. The ad doesn't specify.
According to Politifact, the ad, originally posted on Facebook, was flagged as a part of Facebook's efforts to fight misinformation and fake news. Politifact said the ad is no longer on Craigslist and has been flagged for removal.
In November, Politifact said a similar Craigslist ad for an event at the Phoenix Convention Center seeking actors was debunked. In 2017, Politifact said there was another add seeking actors like the one for the Tulsa rally.
This latest Craigslist ad follows the same outline of the past ones that have been debunked, said Politifact.
The Craigslist ad also said coming to event may apply towards community service. Tulsa County posted on Facebook saying the information in the ad about community service was not true.

I know those ads are fake because I’ve seen the crowds at Trump rallies - 98% white as snow. If he was offering a decent wage I’m sure there would be POC willing to endure his drivel for two hours for $50 - at least pre-pandemic.
Heck, even in one of the blackest cities in America, he could only get a few hundred black people to show up to his Blacks for Trump rally last November in Atlanta. When it comes to Trump, black folks are much smarter than white folks.

But you're forgetting, this is Donald Trump, the president who did more for black people than any president in history. HE's a beloved icon of the African Americans.
