People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

In light of recent pots, I did want to clear up my post; I was discussing people who joined the military in response to a real/perceived/manufactured threat, jumping on the bandwagon. However, there many people who join the military because they realize that the country needs a military at times and choose to be part of it. Some do this because they are drawn to the work (field exercises, firearms training ...), others because they see opportunities, still others (and I was one) who went in because they believed the military needs all sorts of people and points of view and that they might be able to change it from within (I was one and I still believe that)--there are other equally valid reasons. They choose to join knowing they may well be sent to fight by an inept commander, but are willing to take this on. I have great respect for their service, especially that of the senior noncoms and officers who undertake significant sacrifices to keep the military viable.

And then there are some who join because they think they will get to be a "tough cop" and run around with a badge and an armband, or work with shit that goes "BOOM".Big RR wrote: ↑Tue Sep 08, 2020 2:13 pmHowever, there many people who join the military because they realize that the country needs a military at times and choose to be part of it. Or play with the puppies.
And with regard to 'SFB', lib, she would have been the beneficiary of your GI insurance, right? No wonder she's sad you didn't end up in EOD. One wrong move — and it was only a matter of time before you would have made it — and she would have been a well-off widow.liberty wrote:I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Big RR, what ever the thinking or lack there of that gets the individual willing to raise their hand and take the oath, there after they all serve just the same. I am amazed that the picture above shows one of McCain's son's with E5 stripes, in the Infantry. That is a long way from Admiral in the Navy, and I believe a much tougher route.

I think that's Jimmy McCain who enlisted in the Marines at 19. He seemed to be committed to not trading on his dad's or grandad's notoriety and I give him a lot of credit for that. I really don't know why he enlisted, but as I recall, he did do a tour in Iraq. A big difference from the Trumps, but then he had a better role model.
