One minor correction, Bill: The American Independent Party was founded and headed by George Wallace (who obviously had more issues than the war in Vietnam); Curtis "Bomb 'em Back to the Stone Age" LeMay was his VP on the 1968 ballot.

Thanks for the correction, E-line.  I forgot the actual ticket; somehow I had the name 'Miller' on my mind as the VP candidate for the third party (William Miller was actually Goldwater's VP running mate in the 1964 election).   What can I say?  I was only thirteen years old and still in eighth grade when RFK was gunned down during the 1968 primary campaign, and was only seventeen during the summer of '72, which was the period between my HS graduation and beginning my first semester of college that September... (and because of my late-November b'day, I missed out on voting in that election by less than four weeks).

The other thing that affected my fifty-year-old memories was remembering when Wallace got shot in Maryland during the 1972 campaign; I was confused and thought that THIS was during his failed Presidential third-party run rather than when he was one of the clutter of wanna-bes trying to become the Democratic standard-bearer to thwart Nixon's re-election shenanigans.

dividing the north and west from the hapless red states would make the liberal states immediately richer and the red states poorer since they have been sucking off federal welfare since the FDR days, and never gotten better. They produce a tiny fraction of the patents filed by california and have few great universities, more divorces, more unwed births, more teenage pregnancies and more gun deaths, more smokers &c.

But I don't think we should do it anyway. Who is going to look after the helpless children if we (the liberal states) don't? And where else are we going to get unskilled labor and drain cleaners ? Not from the children of rich californians!
