liberty there isn't anything wrong with your belief that we do not inherit the sins of the father. But, if we perpetuate the consequences of the sins of our fathers, how are we any better? That is the point of concepts like affirmative action and reparations - that we are attempting to give the daughters and sons of historically oppressed peoples the same opportunities that are available to the daughters and sons of fathers who lived in sin, who exploited the working poor and enslaved other human beings to make their fortunes that will last for generations. It's a matter of fairness and community. We are better than our forbears, we know and understand better than they did, and we have an obligation to do better than they did. The patriarchy is built around the notion of passing wealth from generation to generation and it must include passing accountability from generation to generation as well.

You honestly believe that? We all have the same opportunities, whether we are a poor kid living with a drug addicted mother or Donald Trump inheriting tons of money (which he did nothing to merit)? Come on Lib--there are no real fresh starts; some can transcend their backgrounds and do well, others cannot. But some at the top of the ladder remain there just because that's where they started.

I am not saying I have a plan to address this and make it better, but let's not pretend it is a fair fresh start--some start 5 feet from the finish line and others on a different continent. Tell me who is going to win the race?

Well--it's been 5 days now and I am happy to say that the democrats have behaved as Sue predicted and embraced Harris instead of squabbling among themselves--a very encouraging development IMHO. Now we need a cogent vision to be communicated (not just "we are not Trump") coupled with attacking Trump as we have seen this week. I think she can win, but it will take a lot of work and a lot of getting the disenchanted voters to the polls in November. It's pretty late to have a new presumptive nominee taking the place of another, but I am very encouraged with what has happened thus far. Hopefully, this is not just a honeymoon period, but the start of something big.

Personally, if I were advising/handling Trump I'd advise him not to debate with her as it's a no win for him--at the very least she'd benefit from the exposure and, you're right, she'd kick his ass. I would advise him to say he won't debate with an illegitimate (or false or something like that) candidate sent to try and steal the election--it would fire up his base. The dems could try and use his ego against him and say he won't debate because he knows he'd lose--and it might work. But his best strategy is to just ignore her--at least until she riles him up. And I'd give even money that will happen.

Apparently the Trump campaign is reading your posts because he's weasling out of the scheduled Sept. 10 debate, claiming "chaos" in the Democratic party (I have never seen a less chaotic transition of anything) and that Barack Obama is holding out for a "better" candidate (Barack and Michelle both endorsed Harris on Wednesday, although it wasn't announced until today), because he believes she is a "Marxist fraud" (Harris was an early endorser and active campaigner for Obama in 2007-8). And Harris is clearly doing everything she can to get under Trump's orange skin, not shying away from reminding everyone he is a convicted felon, an adjudicated sexual assaulter, a serial fraudster and both mentally and temperamentally unfit for office.

I believe in progress. I’d like to see black inner-city communities transform from ghettos to middle class neighborhoods, but how do you do that? Lyndon Johnson’s great society program Job Corps was a great idea, but it didn’t work. I was a student at Gary Job Corps Center at San Marcus TX. What I saw appeared to me to be a tremendous waste of money. The biggest problem appeared to be lack of discipline; there was no homework, because they knew students wouldn’t do it, some students slept in class, and some of the teachers were afraid of the students. It could have done a lot of good; they taught valuable skills like automotive technologies, electrical work, and plumbing. People could have gone from working at McDonalds’ to working as an electrician, and plumbers, and mechanics, and even owning their own businesses, but it didn’t turn out that way. I’m not saying that there were not success stories, but overall, it was a failure. I have no reason to believe that any other government effort would do any better.

The GI Bill worked, but those men had learned discipline in the army and when they returned from the war, they were motivated to have a better life.
