As long as shipping is so cheap that apples from New Zealand sell for about the same price in Portland Oregon as apples from Hood River* Oregon then shipping them makes sense.

Early season satsuma Japanese oranges?

Lotsa citrus grown right here in the USA, I like blood oranges, myself.

btw, as an owner of a Nissan Stanza, Honda Accord, two Vovlos, and Ford Taurus -- without doubt, the longest lasting, least maintenance was the Ford. There are times when we still have it.

Owned a Ford Escort when I first married, it was the worst POS imaginable, traded the sucker in on a Mazda MPV.

As for appliances -- Visio. Again, if the right company with the right situation goes at it, it can be a success even here in our service economy.

Never heard of 'em, but then again haven't purchased any major appliances for over 20 years.

So you traded a Ford for an "almost Ford" :shrug

(and the escorts were notorious POS)
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

If you like to eat seedless grapes year round, there are times that you're going to be buying them from Chile...

(This is true for some other out of season fruits)

No, even though FOMOCO owned some 35% of Mazda at the time (1995) there was ZERO cross pollination between the MPV and anything out of Dearborn.

Besides, the MPV was made in Japan.....the Escort "Proudly Assembled by the UAW" as procalimed by a sticker on the windsheild was an automotive abortion.

20k miles - needed a new radiator b/c of constant overheating.

40k miles - transmission took a massive squat which nessessitated a VERY expensive repair.

60k miles - blown head gasket.

With that (and dumping money into the heap for incidental repairs) we traded the POS in on the Mazda.

The quality, fit and finish was readily apparent from the get go. We paid a lot of $$$$ for the MPV as the Escort was worth next to nothing and was only 6 years old. My ex-wife still drives this van some 12 years later.

Do I hate Fords?

Nope, in fact I consider them lightyears ahead of GM and Chrysler (damning with faint praise, I know)
