I was going to political events by the time I was 7 or 8. I vividly remember my first - we were living in CT at the time (a 4-year diversion from MD) and Mom got involved in the Ella Grasso campaign for CT governor. Mom hosted teas, went to rallies, did some canvassing, and generally took my sister and I along with her wherever she had to go. I was wearing my Ella pin and rooting for women in leadership roles even then......

Oh, and Ella won, first woman governor of CT, and one of the first in the country. Sadly she resigned in her second term when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and she died from it in about a year.

Tell that to Paul Ryan and Reince Priebus.

Sorry, Jim, but the GOP leadership doesn't have a moral problem or even a policy problem with Trump; if he wins, he is certainly not going to get in the way of any Republican legislation (assuming Republicans in Congress will actually start doing their frickin jobs). The leadership's only serious concern with Trump is that, as the top of the ticket, he might be such a public-relations disaster as to flip the Senate and decimate the House majority. But in order to protect the Senate and House, they have to turn out the GOP vote, and that necessarily means supporting the Presidential candidate. All the GOP politicians with skin in the game are going to fall in line behind Trump because they are first and foremost concerned with their own jobs, not the good of the country. The only ones who will actively reject Trump will be those in tight races in predominantly blue states or districts (see, e.g. Mark Kirk) so as to avoid handing the Democrats a high-profile cudgel with which to beat them over the head.

Donald Trump Parts Ways With Corey Lewandowski, His Campaign Manager

Donald J. Trump has fired his contentious campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, a move that comes as the presumptive Republican nominee faces challenges as he heads into the general election.

Mr. Lewandowski could not immediately be reached for comment about his departure, which was announced by the campaign.

“The Donald J. Trump Campaign for President, which has set a historic record in the Republican primary having received almost 14 million votes, has today announced that Corey Lewandowski will no longer be working with the campaign,” the campaign spokeswoman, Hope Hicks, said in a statement. “The campaign is grateful to Corey for his hard work and dedication and we wish him the best in the future.”

Mr. Trump had faced increasing concerns from allies and donors, as well as his children, about the next phase of the campaign as he pivots toward the November election.

Two people briefed on the move, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Mr. Lewandowski was fired.

The campaign manager was seen as having a hostile relationship with many members of the national press corps that covers Mr. Trump, and many officials at the Republican National Committee had strained relationships with him.

And Mr. Lewandowski was often at odds with Mr. Trump’s chief strategist, Paul Manafort, who was brought on in March when the candidate seemed poised for a lengthy fight over delegates.

Mr. Lewandowski was said to have resisted certain moves that would have increased the staff, at times blocking Mr. Manafort from making hires or later undoing them.

But the people briefed on Mr. Lewandowski’s departure said that the circumstances went well beyond any particular incident or any particular relationship.

One person stressed that the move had been in the works for many weeks, particularly since it became clear that Mr. Trump would be the nominee. The person added said that the campaign is now focusing on bringing the party together, including hiring new staff members and adjusting to the race against Mrs. Clinton. And there had been a desire for many weeks to make changes ahead of the Republican National Convention, July 18-21 in Cleveland.

No one inside the campaign was given any advance warning about the dismissal of Mr. Lewandowski, who was on the campaign’s daily 8:30 a.m. conference call on Monday, according to a person briefed on the developments.

On Twitter, some campaign staffers rejoiced at the news of Mr. Lewandowski’s departure.

“Ding dong the witch is dead” wrote Michael Caputo, a Trump communications aide who was said to have been antagonized by Mr. Lewandowski.

The way I see it, this is not a welcome development...

I was hoping that Manafort would be the one who would get frustrated and quit...

Paul Manafort is a long time political pro who was brought on after Trump's defeat in Wisconsin. He was able to get Trump to STFU for a couple of weeks which gave him the opportunity to roll up large victory margins in NY and the Northeast that sealed the nomination...

Lewandowski on the other hand, is a complete political know-nothing whose only qualification was being a long time Trump Yes Man...

He was a leading advocate of the "let Trump Be Trump" faction in the campaign. I would have much preferred to see him stay and Paul go...

This move is probably an indication that Trump is going to try to make an effort to run a more focused and disciplined campaign, but of course Trump being Trump, that will still remain extremely problematic...

LJ, just a question:
Is there any way (by words or action) that Trump could get you to vote for him?

Oldr, the answer is simple; no.

He started out as a completely unqualified candidate, and over the year since he began his campaign, he has poured a super tanker sized quantity of poison into the political well...

His behavior has made him absolutely irredeemable, and on top of that if he tried to somehow completely reverse course and make amends, it would be meaningless, because he's made crystal clear that it is absolutely impossible to believe anything that comes out of his mouth.

Notice how the acronym for the organization is 'RAT'?  I'm sure Trump will have some snarky comment about that.
But it's well known that even rats realize when it's time to abandon a doomed ship.

I just listened to Hillary do a masterful job of a point by point complete deconstruction of both Trumpty's harebrained economic ideas and the mythology of him as a great successful businessman...

It was every bit as good as the speech she gave a couple of weeks ago, reaming him about a dozen new ones on his unfitness for the Presidency based on his reckless and moronic foreign policy and defense positions...

It will be interesting to see if his campaign's supposed "new direction" has any effect when he speaks in response, or if it will it be another sputtering with rage string of bile and non-sequiturs like his response to her take-down of him on foreign policy...

Clinton casts Trump as dangerous — this time, on the economy

Columbus, Ohio (CNN)Hillary Clinton's campaign is going all in on what it believes is a winning political strategy against Donald Trump: Paint him as a dangerous menace to the country.

After slamming Trump for days as a disaster on national security in the aftermath of last weekend's Orlando massacre, Clinton unleashed a similar attack on her Republican rival — this time, on the economy.

The former secretary of state delivered her first general election economic speech in Columbus, Ohio, Tuesday morning, in remarks that once again attempted to dismantle Trump's policy prescriptions and cast the businessman as a danger to the U.S. economy.

"You might think that because he has spent his life as a businessman, he'd be better prepared to handle the economy. Well, it turns out, he's dangerous there, too," Clinton told supporters here. "Just like he shouldn't have his finger on the button, he shouldn't have his hands on our economy."

In lengthy remarks, Clinton challenged Trump's policy proposals point by point, from his suggestion to pay off the national debt by printing money to his stance on Wall Street reform to his tax plan. She warned: "Our nation's economy isn't a game."

"Every day we see how reckless and careless Trump is. He's proud of it," she said. "Well, that's his choice, except when he's asking to be president. Then it's our choice."

The speech was filled with memorable zingers. Slamming Trump for lacking a substantive strategy on job-creation, Clinton said: "But maybe we shouldn't expect better from someone whose famous words are: 'You're fired.'"

And as Clinton went after Trump's business record, she mused: "He's written a lot of books about business. They all seem to end at Chapter 11."[I liked that one... :ok ]

Clinton's pivot to the economy comes at a moment of peril for the Trump campaign.

The first-time political candidate is under siege for a series of missteps since clinching his party's nomination, including his response to the Orlando terrorist attack, repeated criticism of a federal judge's Mexican heritage, and renewed calls to ban Muslims from entering the country. Acknowledging the gravity of his political troubles, Trump on Monday fired his top aide and campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski.

Scrambling to refocus his campaign, Trump plans to deliver a speech in New York Wednesday attacking Clinton.[That's going to be interesting to see...]

But even as Trump struggles to find his footing as he transitions to the general election, the populist candidate has an edge over Clinton on the economy. Fifty-one percent of registered voters believe Trump would handle the economy better than Clinton, compared to 43% who gave better marks to Clinton, according to a CNN/ORC international poll released Tuesday morning.

A Moody's Analytic report that concluded Trump's economic policies would reduce employment by 3.5 million jobs during his first term in office.

"The upshot of Mr. Trump's economic policy positions under almost any scenario is that the U.S. economy will be more isolated and diminished," the report said.

Clinton referenced the report in her remarks at the Fort Hayes Vocational School on Tuesday. The next day, Clinton heads to Raleigh, North Carolina, where she plans to offer a detailed outline of her own economic platform.

Clinton's Columbus speech in part mirrors her remarks in San Diego earlier this month, in which she delivered a blistering critique of Trump's foreign policy preparedness. Clinton and her Democratic allies began using the remarks to raise money and saw an uptick in response, according to aides.

As Clinton was giving the speech, aides said, it became clear that the San Diego formula of using Trump's own words to discredit him in an almost roast-style condemnation had the potential to be effective on other topics, including the economy.[Excellent formula. Nothing is as damaging to Trump as what he himself has said.]
