Re: Yet another school shooting
I have owned guns in the past and will likely do so again in the future. The last gun I owned I bought after a 2-week wait from a local gun shop. What has that got to do with anything?
Only a deluded person thinks that owning a dangerous thing like a gun makes you safer. It does not. The evidence proves it.
I have also taken vitamin supplements, but I don't believe that vitamin C prevents colds because the evidence says it does not.
People with no cogent argument try to change the subject. Weak.
The data is the data. The facts are the facts.
We need more effective regulation of gun ownership. We need to regulate gun ownership and use rationally and with a method which locates the costs of guns on those whose behavior can minimize those costs, like we do driving and car ownership and like we do with the chemical industry. If regulation costs so much that I don't think its worth it, then I won't buy a gun.

Could you rephrase that in unmuddled English? We need more effective regulation of gun ownership. We need to regulate gun ownership and use rationally and with a method which locates the costs of guns on those whose behavior can minimize those costs, like we do driving and car ownership and like we do with the chemical industry. So does anyone here still think that US gun laws work?rubato wrote:I have owned guns in the past and will likely do so again in the future.
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: Yet another school shooting
I figured it out. Based on his previous post it's obvious that rubato owns guns because he believes they prevent scurvy.
He is a scientist, after all.
He is a scientist, after all.
Re: Yet another school shooting
Well, I have to admit, that's the most compelling argument for the repeal of the Second Amendment and a total ban on the private ownership of firearms I've ever seen....Sean wrote:So does anyone here still think that US gun laws work?rubato wrote:I have owned guns in the past and will likely do so again in the future.

Re: Yet another school shooting
I just read through that article myself, and surprise surprise, as Joe correctly observes, rube has once again provided a link that doesn't prove his point...I read the wikipedia article you referenced before posting my questions and asked my questions because wikipedia didn't answer my questions.
I have referred to the 40% number as though it were a fact in my posts on this, but Joe you raise some very legitimate questions about it...
What makes me believe it's probably at least close to accurate, is the fact that none of even the most hardcore gun lobby advocates, (including Wayne LaPierre and Larry Pratt) has ever challenged it.
When David Gregory used that figure in his interview with LaPierre a couple of weeks ago, one would think that if it was questionable, LaPierre would have jumped on that....

Re: Yet another school shooting
(Three post hat trick....
)
Anyone who has been following the discussions we've been having about this since the tragedy in Newtown knows full well that I have presented a number of "cogent", thoughtful, and well researched posts on the topic...(My position is essentially the same as Judge Burns, whose remarks I posted here.)
My purpose in bringing attention to your gun ownership in this discussion wasn't to "change the subject"...
It was to get you to illustrate, with your own words, the hypocrisy/stupidity of your position...
And I appear to have succeeded....
That's a complete strawman rube....People with no cogent argument try to change the subject. Weak.

Re: Yet another school shooting
There are other reasons to own a gun than believing they make you safer.
Strain yourself, and try and think of one?
In any case, I have never said guns should be outlawed. But the shooting sports should pay for themselves either by a direct tax, use fee, or insurance. All you can do is change the subject. You have no answer to that.
My owning or not owning a gun has nothing to do with that.

You read the article and found none of the answers to any of your questions? Or you just looked at the article now and didn't find the answer to one of them? And how does this prevent you from searching elsewhere? My point was general. If you want to know something go look it up yourself. If you cannot be bothered than neither ought anyone else.

Re: Yet another school shooting
But what reason would there be for owning one, if you believe, (as you have said you do):There are other reasons to own a gun than believing they make you safer.
that they make you "less safe" " increase your risk" and make it more likely that someone will break into your home?
How do you reconcile that?
Personally, if I believed that owning a gun would make me less safe and more likely to be the target of a home invasion, I wouldn't own one...
But hey, that's just me....
ETA:
Do you own a gun to ward off all those wolves, bears and Mexican border smugglers you encounter in suburban Santa Cruz?

Re: Yet another school shooting
Staggeringly stupid.
I have hydroxide in my house even though I know it can cause serious burns and blindness because, in balance, the advantage of having it outweighs the risks. I don't have to lie and pretend it isn't dangerous, it is. I work with far more dangerous chemicals all the time but the risks are always acknowledged and balanced; and some chemicals we don't use at all, like benzene, because the risks are greater than the value.
Guns are dangerous. They make you less safe. Only a deluded moron can't admit it. If self-protection were the only reason to have a gun, I wouldn't.

Re: Yet another school shooting
So retard owns a gun to make himself less safe.
He's consistent at least.
He's consistent at least.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
Re: Yet another school shooting
Ahh, so to follow your analogy...I have hydroxide in my house even though I know it can cause serious burns and blindness because, in balance, the advantage of having it outweighs the risks.
You find the benefit of having a gun in your home "outweighs the risk" of not having a gun in your home...
Which means that you must see it as more likely than not, that on balance, the presence of a gun in your home will decrease your risk, and make you more safe...
Even when all the potential negative factors are taken into account...
Which is of course the exact opposite of what you have been insisting is the case...
(for everyone else, anyway....)

I guess I need to explain it to you....
Please pay attention.
There are some places on the internet where people go and ask questions to people they have come to know.
Like Plan B for example.
And there are many people who are helpful and give useful information.
As opposed to you, who are someone who claims to be a scientist but act like you have a motherfucking test tube stuck up your ass that was placed there by your rich doctor wife who supports you so you will care for her bees when she's not spending her ample free time (her defining characteristic) sticking her unprotected finger up old men's asses to check their prostates and then doesn't wash her hands before making you a shit sandwich because she enjoys watching you eat turds while you smile and grovel at her feet thanking her for allowing you to exist.
And furthermore, you have absolutely no reason to be here at Plan B other than to display yourself as an ongoing useless joke and to show how sick some people can be when they have nothing but hatred for people who are normal interacting humans.
Please go away.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, you perfect stinking example of festering excremental internet waste.
Re: Yet another school shooting
Joe, it's not healthy to hold things back. I think it's time to let us know how you really feel.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: Yet another school shooting
Wow Joe....
You're getting in touch with your inner Tim....
