Trump Reconfirms Support for "Harsh Interrogation" Including Waterboarding

Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Several of President Donald Trump's cabinet nominations have expressed an intention not to bring back waterboarding and other forms harsh interrogation, but Trump himself said he would not be opposed to using either to protect the country.  Trump told ABC News on Wednesday he was willing to reauthorize waterboarding based on his belief that it "absolutely" works, but planned to defer to his commanders on whether or not it would actually be used.

While a draft of an executive order to allow the Central Intelligence Agency to reopen so-called "black site" prisons has reportedly been circulated among Trump's national security leaders (there's another one of those unilateral imperial pronouncements again...) many of the techniques used at the prisons -- including waterboarding -- were outlawed by Congress in 2015.

"I will rely on Pompeo and Mattis and my group," Trump said in the interview, his first since his inauguration last Friday.  "And if they don't want to do, that's fine.  If they do wanna do, then I will work toward that end.  I want to do everything within the bounds of what you're allowed to do legally (excuse me, Mr. President, but if Congress outlawed it in 2015 then I'm pretty sure it ain't legal).  But do I feel it works?  Absolutely, I feel it works."

Trump said his strong belief in waterboarding is based on high ranking members of the intelligence community tell him that waterboarding works.

"I have spoken as recently as 24 hours ago with people at the highest level of intelligence," Trump said. "I asked them the question, 'Does it work?  Does torture work?'  And the answer was 'Yes, absolutely.' "

The unasked and unanswered question is "What does it work FOR???"

I guess it works pretty well if you want to get a suspect to talk, to say something, anything you want, so that it will stop. It works so well you can often extract a "confession" from anyone, regardless of whether they're guilty of anything.

As a method to find out information you need, information you don't already know....not so good.

Heard on NPR this afternoon the there are some good Christians in the mid-West that are spreading the good news that The Donald is just G-d's of making Pence the president.

Spent some time re-reading the constitution later today. The XXV Amendment has a lovely little Article 4. It says the Vice President with a majority of the president's cabinet can fire the president! Just jointly send a letter to the president pro tem of the Senate and the speaker of the House declaring the president is unable to perform the duties of the office, say because he is a too ignorant and stupid to actually defend the Constitution from its enemies, domestic or foreign. If the president disagrees in writing, but the first group repeats their earlier declaration, Congress can confirm the firing of the president, by a 2/3 vote, and the Veep is promoted.

They don't have to impeach him, if congress can get the Veep and more than half the cabinet to go along.

No little minion, those are not the options, your bullying and fear-mongering notwithstanding. I'd suggest you read the Constitution, key cases, a scholarly article or two, but I know that suggestion has fallen on deaf ears time and time again.

So just don't be surprised when your little house of straw comes tumbling down. It won't be tomorrow. It won't even be next week or next month, but it is going to happen.
