Obviously an idiotic comment. Just to take issue with the subordinate clause: Obama never used the IRS as a political weapon. He did however throw some IRS chiefs under the bus. There were accusations that the IRS in Cincinnati unfairly targeted non-profits of a conservative hue.
As the erstwhile long time treasurer of a 501c3 body (annual budget around $10,000 from member dues with about 100 members at $30 each plus donations; stated goal to improve public understanding and education about handling hazardous materials in the workplace and in public areas; books balanced to the penny every year) I know a bit about the requirements for typical non-profits who do not want to pay tax. The IRS and the state require you to file annually to make sure you continue to meet the regulations which have some monetary limits and also some specific limitations on what you are allowed to do. Broadly, you cannot make some types of political statements and at the same time maintain a 501c3 status.
The IRS was faced with a bunch of applications for this status from groups who claimed tea party allegiance and also tax reform as their focus. If I were at the IRS charged with protecting public dollars I would spend my time looking at a group who wanted tax free status in order to change the tax laws rather than one who wanted to make sure that puppies did not die in the streets. So I think the IRS made exactly the correct calls here. These tea party groups of course sued the IRS; and in a little observed Trumpian gesture of earlier this year, the
IRS settled with these groups with $$$$.
I am not of course condoning IRS misbehavior. But they got it right here and should not have been pilloried for defending public money. And to a large extent I blame Obama for not sticking up for the guys who were ding the right think.
Spare a thought for the IRS who have to deal with this new tax code with no tim to get out guidance and fewer and fewer staff to do it with.
