Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders says he's running for president

In an interview with The Associated Press, Sanders confirmed his plans to formally join the race Thursday.

The self-described "democratic socialist" enters the race as a robust liberal alternative to Hillary Rodham Clinton, and he pledged to do more than simply raise progressive issues or nudge the former secretary of state to the left in a campaign in which she is heavily favored.

"People should not underestimate me," Sanders said. "I've run outside of the two-party system, defeating Democrats and Republicans, taking on big-money candidates and, you know, I think the message that has resonated in Vermont is a message that can resonate all over this country."

After he loses, I hope he takes the Green Party nomination... :ok

I really didn't think he would do it, but bless him for taking on the horrific inequalities facing our country, and working to move the discussion into the national dialog (as something beyond the mere wringing of hands)!

Here's what Bob Reich had to say about Bernie today, and he is right on:
Bernie Sanders is officially in -- which is good for Hillary Clinton and good for America. I know Bernie as a principled populist who not only understands the big-money takeover of America but also has the ideas and courage to do take on the privileged and powerful. Because he’ll be a strong voice to the left of Hillary Clinton, he’ll give her room to be tougher on Wall Street and big corporations than she might otherwise be. More importantly, he’ll allow a national conversation about the savage inequalities that are destroying the fabric of American life, our economy, and our democracy – in contrast to the Republican clown car whose conversation for the next year and a half will be about the virtues of “trickle-down economics” and the “free market.” Thank you, Bernie, for taking this on.

This is a positive move. It might be a much more interesting campaign than I thought.

:ok

I heard it might be a Sanders/Feingold ticket. Having Feingold in the conversation would be good for the country, too.

So he's the Anti-Hillary candidate. Good

Bernie Sanders is 73 years old, too old.

One person here would very likely say that one of the best presidents in U.S. history was considered to be too old when he was elected.

I like Sanders as the best alternative to the Shady Lady so far. With a little grooming and polishing I hope to see him as a viable candidate and make it to the inevitable debate season. Unfortunately, there's a load of crazy, undeserved, blind loyalty, momentum behind Clinton and she may get the nom if merely by default. There will be a guaranteed Repugs win if she gets the nod.

Sadly, I feel the christian-right Repugs will capitalize on Sanders being Jewish and, like Mitt Romney and his Mormonism, the holier-than-thou middle Americans will see him being sold as the anti-christ. The best people for the job rarely get to the finish line.

Sanders/O'Malley 2016.

Actually Ray, I think the whole socialist thing might be more of a turnoff...

I would dearly wish to see Sanders win the Democratic nomination, but I confine my dreaming for good fortune to things that have a better chance of happening...

Like winning the Mega Millions Lotto...

As would any sensible person...

BTW, if Hillary is elected, she will only be a few months younger than Mr. Reagan was when he took Office....

But of course mentioning her age would be

SEXIST!

Age shouldn't matter as much as it might have in the past, given advances in medicine and the life expectancies of folks in Sanders's and Clinton's generation.

Age per se shouldn't matter; what's important is the health and vitality of the specific individual.

I don't see any problem with either Sanders or Clinton by that measure, and it certainly wasn't a problem in Mr. Reagan's case.

LJ. MAYBE SO

But we both know the Repugs will get much more political traction using the "Jew" thing rather than the "socialist" thing. As Americans, almost 99.9% of us participate in some sort of "socialist" program offered by the State. Conversely, only 1.4% of Americans are Jewish and not only do they practice odd cult-like religious rites, they have "all the money." Nothing scares the christian heartland more -- well, maybe atheists -- and the grand, old, politicians in D.C. are proficient in the art of fear mongering. It's what they do best. Let the smear tactics begin.

Back to you LJ for a twenty paragraph rebuttal.
