Whenever Trump doesn't like the media narrative, (in this case, probably the coverage of the first week of the Manafort trial, and the way he undermined his intelligence chiefs on Russian election interference) one of his favorite go-too tools in his toxic toolbox is to pick a fight with a prominent African American (in this case LeBron James) to try to change the story and also send a dog whistle to stroke the racists in his base...

There was likely a more specific method to his madness in this case - there is a too-close-to-call special election in Ohio this week, and Trump was in Columbus for a rally* on Saturday. He probably thought that there was a groundswell of anger about James departing for L.A. that he could turn to his advantage. But LeBron James is not Colin Kaepernick, and Trump doesn't appear to have considered the possibility that his attack would turn off far more voters that it might attract.




*at which his talk of destroying the careers of Republicans who oppose him made him sound more petulant and vindictive than ever, if that's possible

Yes prime asshole. If the facts are as alleged, he has just served up his son and his son's fiancee for jail terms. He was Erie County Executive when I lived in Buffalo and he was widely believed to be corrupt at least among the people I knew. I had no personal evidence of that. The defense seems to be that he did not sell his own shares so he can't be guilty. That of course is a straw man because he is not being accused of that. He held his shares in Australia where trading in that specific stock had been suspended so he couldn't sell if he wanted to.
