No, FedEx can’t ship my kayak - neither can Greyhound.

And I’ve been looking for a salvage factory rack from a compatible RAV4 since 2009 - they aren’t, in fact, easy to find.

Thanks much for the ‘mansplaining’ life hack attempt, though.
I find it-quite frankly-impossible that FedEx cannot ship a kayak. If it fits in a trailer, they can ship it! They shipped a pair of 8' awnings to my mother, a truck bed to a guy I know, an engine to my cousin, and a piece of equipment the size and weight of a compact car to my employer.

What year is your RAV? I can start digging for a rack.

Pardon, I should have been clearer in my statement.

Yes, FedEx will ship my $350.00 Emotion 8 Comet kayak - for many times the value of the kayak, they’ll ship it. I could buy a deluxe, top of the line sea kayak for the amount of money FedEx quoted me to ship my cheap beginner kayak.

I settled on Delta for a reason - they claim to ship a solo kayak for $97 anywhere in the contiguous 48. That’s a shipping cost I could afford then (or now) to invest in holding onto a $350 kayak that I’d purchased for $100 less than the MSRP (so, for $250). But again, I phoned Delta’s freight division multiple times while still in Montana and many more times since leaving and they’ve consistently failed to follow through with issuing me a shipper account #, which is required in advance to dropping my bubble-wrapped kayak off at the freight terminal of Helena’s airport.

So again, I’ve sold the Montana kayak to a friend in Montana and I’ve got this one waiting for me to pick up at Walmart as soon as I can clear the 20” of snow off the roof of my cousin’s factory rack-equipped Highlander.

Image

This one is longer so will track better, and has a skeg wheel which will make it easier to transport from vehicle to launch, which is a nice bonus. Usually sells for @ $500, but I got it on clearance at the evil empire for $199 + free ship to store, can’t beat that!

Jarl, if you can locate a factory roof rack for my 1999 RAV4 4 door, you’ll win my undying devotion. I’ve searched every salvage parts source I could find online and came up empty. In 2009 I won the bid on a used factory rack on eBay, but the fucking seller reneged on sending me the rack (by claiming he discovered it was damaged when he went to package it for shipping) because I’d won on a very low bid because apparently nobody else was in the market at the time.

I’d like the factory rails as a base because many of the aftermarket systems I’ve researched within my price range don’t look all that great. I can’t afford Thule or another higher end system, especially when it’s unlikely I’ll be driving this vehicle for enough years to justify investing in such a pricey system.

Oh and yes, Greyhound ships kayaks - length limited to 82”, which is a play boat, not a real kayak. My Emotion Comet 8 is actually 8’ 3”, and that’s pretty short for a recreational kayak.

I can start checking salvage yards next week-nobody will be up and running today after the snow. Have you checked LKQ? There is also partrequest.com-they dug up a door panel for my Jeep that NOBODY could find. (Albeit in Idaho Falls.)

Think I found one, at The Parts Broker in upstate NY. Price is $150 shipped to Wareham. (Probably Robertson's Auto Salvage on Cranberry Highway.) Call 877-276-7278, extension 5, ask for John.

Not sure how close to Wareham you are...if you're far away, I might be able to pick it up for you. (My FIL lives nearby.)

Please call today, if possible...I talked to the guy there (another John) and he said he had one.

I called, he thought it was a 4Runner - but then they hooked me up with a RAV4 rack, only it’s in Port Murray NJ and the guy doesn’t want to ship it because it’s too big. So, I called them direct to see if I could pay for it and have them hold it until I can get over there to pick it up on a visit to NY family. He’s checking to see if it’s really in saleable condition and will get back to me.

The place in Wareham hasn’t got the part, sadly - that’s right down the road from me.

Hopefully the Port Murray guy will come through; I’ve been missing my eldest niece and would be able to crash with her on a trip to get the rack - $100 is what he quoted me, and he’s willing to hang onto them for me until I can go - which wouldn’t be until my hospice client passes.

Ye gods-I told him three times it was for a RAV!

Have you checked locally? Offhand, there are some big yards in the area that are pretty big. Offhand: Middleboro Auto Salvage, Freedman's, W. Pittsley, and Hank Zion's in Middleboro, Tiverton Auto Parts in Tiverton, RI, and the huge Chuckran's in Bridgewater.

I’ll try them on Monday or Tuesday, headed off to work now. The guy in wareham suggested carparts.com, but I realize many salvage yards don’t register with them.

Thanks for you efforts!

The Cut, Cut, Cut Act!

Call me (((DENSE))) but what's the difference between a roof rack and roof bars for a '94 RAV4/4 door? Regardless, maybe this will work for you. Please lay some ‘womansplaining’ on me.

Exactly; I would much prefer a used factory luggage rack (the tech term for my model year; newer RAVs have roof rails instead) because I’ve read so many horror stories about lower end aftermarket racks not fitting properly and resulting in damaged boats or bikes.

Some also require drilling holes in the roof-rarely a good thing.

Back to the opening topic of this thread. Some of the 'main stream lying media' have been running stories about focus groups in the rust belt, where the group is made of Trump supporters who are not traditional Republicans. There is IMNSHO, a trend--the big lie tactic is working.

The groups nearly completely still support Trump. They believe his promises ARE being kept. He is 'fixing' the problem of bad immigrants. Jobs for ordinary people are more available and pay more now. The economy is much better than it was under Obama--look at how great the stock market is doing.

All this is based on no direct evidence whatsoever. For their personal situation, nothing is better, except their hopes. Local industry is not returning. Small business is not growing new customers. But they are convinced all good things are happening some where else, and it will be for them too soon. Any evidence to the contrary is just fake news.

SG, I started a thread on exactly this topic yesterday:

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=18492

Sounds like you may have seen the focus group that I reference in the OP of that thread...
