Osama Bin Laden has been killed
Re: Osama Bin Laden has been killed
Why do I find it odd that he was able to be positively identified by DNA so quickly prior to being dumped in the sea?
Can this be done so quickly in the field?

Bah!

Re: Osama Bin Laden has been killed
they didn't have a proper burial, right? But then, I would think we're better than ruthless, asshole terrorists, don't you?Let's talk about the over 1100 victims that didn't get recovered from Ground Zero, shall we? Where's their proper burial?
That being said, the burial at sea makes a lot of sense, especially since it was within the islamic custom of burial within 24 hours. When the nazis killed the jews in death camps, they treated the bodies with disrespect and cremated them (something I understand many jewish traditions don't accept) just to add insult to injury. That we treated the body as a body and disposed of it in a generally acceptable manner, taking into account we didn't want to create a shrine (or have him dug up and made some sort of saint like john paul II) shows proper restraint. We did the best we could under the circumstances; I think the administration did well on this one (especially since some will say it is just proof that he wasn't killed at all, and others will criticize obama for not having the body put on display and hauled around the country so we could spit at it).
Re: Osama Bin Laden has been killed
I recognise the need not to have a shrine to the dead shit, but the shrine could have been a down town sewage farm, with a big sign inviting people to piss on the grave...

It's a body, why treat it badly? It punishes no one; all it accomplishes is to piss some people off (and what's the point of doing that for no reason?). IMHO burying it where it is inaccessible to others is the best remedy.

Pissing on the graves or corpses of defeated enemies is a long standing and satisfying tradition..

You killed my [fill in the blank] but I'm pissing on your grave so I'm satisfied?Gob wrote:Pissing on the graves or corpses of defeated enemies is a long standing and satisfying tradition..
I guess if satisfaction comes easily to you.
Re: Osama Bin Laden has been killed
I don't rejoice over his death, but I got a bit bent when I heard there were complaints about the manner of his burial. It's my understanding no country would take his remains, due to the potential for a shrine developing at that site.
As to his death, I prefer this sentiment:
As to his death, I prefer this sentiment:
I am rather concerned for the retaliation that may be imminent following this turn of events. I am grateful for whatever peace of mind is derived by the familes and loved ones of the 9/11 murdered given this turn of events.I mourn the loss of thousands of precious lives, but I will not rejoice in the death of one, not even an enemy. Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. I realize of course Big RR, that you have an extremely difficult time recognizing moral distinctions of almost any sort, but please tell me that you are not trying to draw some sort of bizarre moral equivalence between the protection of elected leaders from murderous thugs who would seek to overturn the decisions of the people with a bullet or a bomb, and the security of a brutal thug who masterminded the murder of thousands of innocent people.Given the elaborate security systems we create to protect out own leaders, I think that could backfire.
Spot on.there's a big difference between celebrating taking out an enemy who killed thousands of your people (which I see as akin to V-E and V-J Day celebrations) and celebrating the intentional massacre of innocent civilians.

I'm just impressed that it happened at the perfect time to take this out of the headlines...The Hen wrote:Why do I find it odd that he was able to be positively identified by DNA so quickly prior to being dumped in the sea?

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

Yes, but Obama and Osama are separated only by BS, so there is stands to reason.Gob wrote:In upcoming news; "Tea Party Birthers demand to see Osama's death certificate...."

It's his heroic myth. Not ours.Big RR wrote:Given the elaborate security systems we create to protect out own leaders, I think that could backfire.I hope they use the fact that he had built such an elaborate security system for himself out of cowardice and selfishness.

Re: Osama Bin Laden has been killed
It would be nice if he was stuff full of sausage, wrapped in bacon and buried in israel, but most likely his 'proper' burial was being shoved out the door of the loaded to capacity pave-low (which are not equipped with clay burial jars) after being spit on a few times, while everyone rehearsed what they are telling the press. The Hen wrote:Why do I find it odd that he was able to be positively identified by DNA so quickly prior to being dumped in the sea?
