As Chuck Todd has correctly pointed out, the data shows that voters don't usually show up to say "thank you"...

Jim--I agree; the Trumpers may have won the battle, but lost the war.

What I thought was particularly telling in her speech was that, while she went to great efforts to decry the partisanship and mean-spiritedness in government today, she didn't comment on Kavanaugh's channeling of Trump before the committee. I kept hoping to hear something about it, but she'd far rather remain in the Senate than be right.

As for Flake, I don't know what his excuse is.

How foolish could I be? Watching Susan Collins and hoping that somehow she might save some concept of liberalism? Instead she delivers a victory to Trump and McConnell. CNN saying that McConnell’s strategy wrt Garland was a spectacular “masterful” victory. Yes in the same sense that Trump’s billions (???) are a spectacular victory. In the same week that we see that the Trump family essentially stole much of their wealth (not all: they would still be spectacularly rich if they had played by the rules, allegedly) from the rest of us, so too did we see how theft benefits McConnell.

In fairness, I will say that she laid out a much better case on behalf of Kavanaugh's nomination than I have heard anyone else make...

I think she was more focused on a primary challenge on her right...

If she had chosen to vote against Kavanaugh, I think she could probably have been re-elected pretty easily as an independent, (Maine has a tradition of voting for Independents; their other Senator Angus King is one, and he's cruising to an easy re-election this year)

And if she had gone that route which ever party she chose to caucus with would have been happy to have her, and allowed her to retain her seniority...

I know a couple of very popular Maine Democrats who are being courted to run against her, too.

Given that the controversy over Kavanaugh is likely to continue and likely further revelations regarding his history both personal and legal, I suspect the animosity over her vote will sustain itself until 2020.
