Travel by air, get felt up
Re: Travel by air, get felt up
I don't know where you fly, but so far in Memphis, Helena, Great Falls, Denver, Las Vegas, NYC, New Jersey, Baltimore, Bangor, Portland, Green Bay and I can't recall where else I've gone through TSA since 9/11 I have only encountered polite and friendly security. Some are more reserved than others, but never have I been treated rudely.
Now granted, I approach such folks with a smile on my face because I was always taught by grandma that you get more flies with honey than vinegar. That rule has held true my entire life.
I honestly see a lot of entitled breeders who are likely the root of these complaints; some folks expect others to indulge their kids exactly as they do. Again, I've flown a fair amount in the U.S. post 9/11 and I've seen no issues with kids going through TSA except if their were behavior issues.
Much ado about nothing. TSA should worry about security and the breeders need to step up and worry about prepping their kids for the experience of pat down.

I suspect many of them are simply closet pedophiles getting their jollies!Scooter wrote:There have been far too many of these incidents involving small children not to conclude that TSA could do a far better job in the way they deal with kids. One thing I see all the time is that airport security staff maintain exactly the same stern, emotionless affect with children that they use with adults. It's unnecessary* and does not help to put children at ease when contronted by a stranger who wants to put his/her hands on him/her. Nor does screeching at the parents when the child gets upset do anything but escalate the situation.

I wouldn't go that far, but they clearly haven't been trained to understand that children are not just short adults, or that the uniform isn't a licence to act like a prison guard.

THESE TSA GOONS NEED A GOOD BEAT DOWN - IN PRISON!
Dina Frank, who is developmentally disabled, wound up on the TSA's radar at John F. Kennedy Airport
Four months after the Transportation Security Administration launched a program to help airline passengers with disabilities, a New York family found out just how little “TSA Cares.”
Traveling from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Florida, the Frank family was yanked out of line as it boarded the plane in a dispute over how 7-year-old Dina had been screened. The little girl, who has cerebral palsy, walks with crutches and leg braces.
“They make our lives completely difficult,” said her father, Dr. Joshua Frank, a Long Island pediatrician. “She’s not a threat to national security.”
Flying is always difficult for the family, but this week was particularly dreadful, Frank and his wife, Marcy, said.
With her crutches and orthotics, Dina cannot walk through metal detectors and instead is patted down by security agents. The girl, who is also developmentally disabled, is often frightened by the procedure, her father said.
Marcy Frank usually asks the agents to introduce themselves to her daughter, but those on duty on Monday were exceptionally aggressive, Joshua Frank said, and he began to videotape them with his iPhone.
“And the woman started screaming at me and cursing me and threatening me,” he said.
Eventually, a supervisor decided it was sufficient to inspect Dina’s crutches and allowed the family to leave for the gate.
They were there for an hour before the agents reappeared with a manager to tell them that proper protocol had not been followed, and that Dina had to be screened after all, the Franks said. After initially offering to pat her down at the gate, they insisted she return to the security area, Joshua Frank said.
“So then I got aggravated,” he said.
With Dina now in her wheelchair, Frank raced her across the JetBlue terminal, but by then, the family had missed its plane. The Franks caught a subsequent flight.
The TSA did not respond to a request for comment.
“They’re harassing people,” Joshua Frank said. “This is totally misguided policy. Yes, I understand that TSA is in charge of national security and there’s all these threats.”
But, he added, “For her to be singled out, it’s crazy.”
Marcy Frank said that the family was so proud of Dina being able to walk, something she recently accomplished with medical treatment.
“They still attack her like she’s Osama bin Laden,” she said. “It’s not fair.”
Joshua Frank isn’t hopeful about TSA Cares, a program launched in December that “strives to provide the highest level of security while ensuring that all passengers are treated with dignity and respect.”
“They need to be more sensitive,” he said. “They claim they try, but they’re not.”

dales, show me a reliable source that a disabled child was 'roughed up'; the article is nothing but the unsubstantiated claims of two hypersensitive parents. Where's the unbiased independent witness? If I saw a disabled child roughed up, I'd go to the press - I'm sure most other decent folk would, too.

From FORBES: http://www.forbes.com/sites/realspin/20 ... t-the-tsa/
International molested 7-year-old Dina Frank so “aggressively” her family missed their flight. Dina suffers from cerebral palsy, yet her assailants still showed no compassion or mercy. And when her father tried to film the abuse, an agent “screamed” at him to stop — though “TSA does not prohibit the public, passengers or press from photographing, videotaping or filming at security checkpoints…,” or so the agency’s website insists. ”They make our lives completely difficult,” Joshua Frank, told The Daily, a newspaper for iPad. “They’re harassing people. This is totally misguided policy.”

Re: Travel by air, get felt up
If there was no harassment involved and the TSA had nothing to hide, why did they stop the parents from filming the incident? And if they decided they had to re-screen the girl why did they insist on returning her to the security checkpoint, a considerable distance away, rather than giving her a pat-down in the gate area, where she already was--especially since they knew that doing so would cause the family to miss their flight?
ETA - flying with kids is hard enough, and flying with a disabled child must be a lot harder...why must the TSA make it even harder?

Again, Econoline, absent independent eyewitness to what must have been an outrageously disruptive incident as described, you just accept at face value the parents' account that the TSA agent screamed & cursed at them (screamed? really? in the security area of a NYC airport?), treated the child like Osama bin Laden, etc?
Color me a bit more skeptical. Let's see if a lawsuit is filed, or if they file a formal complaint with TSA, or if they are just whining their way into their 15 minutes of fame.
Why aren't these people suing? Or at least calling their Senators and demanding hearings re: these outrageous human rights violations? Roughing up a disabled child? That's ABUSE.

Sorry, I just read the article again and it made me laugh.
The Franks were 'yanked' out of line over Dina's screening.
'They make our lives completely difficult.'
Really? Your lives are completely difficult because of TSA? For the 20 minutes or half hour they spend going through screening?
Thin skinned for people with a disabled kid. I'd think her CB causes more difficulty in their lives overall.
Go to the airport earlier. Prepare Dina for the certainty of pat down.
Or, drive to Florida in the comfort of your own vehicle, unaccosted by TSA.
I know; I'm a heartless bitch.

Baby security breach closes NJ airport terminal
By SAMANTHA HENRY, Associated Press
Friday, April 27, 2012
(04-27) 18:29 PDT Newark, N.J. (AP) --
A terminal at Newark Liberty International Airport was shut down for over an hour Friday after officials discovered that a baby hadn't been properly screened, Transportation Security Administration officials said.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the airport, described the incident as a security breach that occurred at around 1:15 p.m. at a security checkpoint. Terminal C was evacuated and passengers had to go through security screening again.
TSA spokeswoman Lisa Farbstein said a mother and baby went through a metal detector when the machine sounded an alarm. The mother handed the child to the father, who had already been screened. The mother was cleared, but the baby hadn't been properly screened. The parents and baby left the checkpoint and headed to their gate, Farbstein said.
TSA officers searched for the family in the secure area of the terminal and notified Port Authority police as per protocol, but they emphasized that it was a low-risk situation, Farbstein said.
A TSA official said they had explained the circumstances of the breach to the Port Authority police and recommended against evacuating the terminal since it was a low-risk situation.
Steve Coleman, a Port Authority spokesman, said that it took the TSA more than 30 minutes to notify police of the lapse and that officers "took immediate action to make sure the breach did not endanger passengers or our facility."
"We're not going to second-guess a real-time decision made by our police department to err on the side of caution and protect passenger safety," he said.
The terminal and checkpoint were closed from 1:30 p.m. to 2:50 p.m.
Passenger Jennifer Pallanich said she was on a Houston-bound flight scheduled to depart at about 2 p.m. and boarding had been completed, but because of the breach, the passengers had to evacuate and go through security screening again.![]()

So you're saying that one out of this many airports (52 if I counted correctly) had a delay of 1hr and 20 min? I've sat on the tarmac in the plane for more than twice that long for a mechanical problem.

Re: Travel by air, get felt up
I just went through security at Savannah/Hilton Head Int'l airport.
I was full body scanned for the first time. I got through security in 10 minutes, despite carrying a medical device subject to heightened scrutiny. I stupidly wore a partially metal hairclip, so had to step aside for an additional 30 seconds of harassment.
The TSA agents smiled and engaged in joking with me about my statement that after a week in Savannah, I didn't have any money left in my pockets that would disrupt the scan.
Bastards! They make my life completely difficult.
