So, you have this funny looking guy of German descent with a chip on his shoulder a mile wide and at least a bit of megalomania also going on in his personality profile, using his charismatic gifts for connecting with people to the end of stirring up the hatred and bigotry of all classes, with just the right amount of plausible deniability for the truly racist connections that many more moderate citizens can still justify liking him - for his supposed genius economic plan to revitalize the nation in very hard times for the average Gerry; details alarmingly thin, but crowds cheer - and yet this guy does not in any way whatsoever remind you . . . just a little in terms of personality profile . . . of another German tyrant of years past?

It creeps up on you, you know. It doesn't punch you in the stomach with genocide on the first date. Tyranny seduces you first with easy answers to all that ails you in your way of life, then bites you in the ass when it really counts.

Trump is poison and I tremble with fear for the next 8 years of our nation's history if he is elected.

The thing everyone here, except Wes, seems to understand is that Trump is a con man who is tapping into that legitimate viewpoint and cynically dancing with the media all the way to a likely nomination. Trump may believe a little of what he is saying, but for the most part he is manipulating a huge part of the voters in an obvious way. It's possible, Wes, that you understand this and say at least he cares enough to be "our" voice. But Trump is an obnoxious huckster. If you want to see an authentic candidate tapping into much the same frustration/anger but on the left side, take a look at Sanders, he's the real deal.

For the record, I'm 150% German in my heritage and very proud of that, but also ashamed as are the great majority of German people for the homeland's behavior under Hitler's regime. My father's family only came here in the very late 1880s and my grandfather, a 1st generation American, was in a battle opposite a cousin in WWII. It's not ancient history to me in any way, and I have been since I was a teenager a pretty close read student of Holocaust history; it becomes an obsession when you are a sensitive kid who cries over starving kids in Africa and need to try to understand how you came from people who watched their neighbors get trucked away to death camps.

I'm fascinated by the psychology involved in the process of one human being coming to power over millions of others and ultimately perpetrating atrocties in their names and with their active cooperation, or blind obeisance.

This has happened many times in human history and will, I'm certain, happen again. Aristotle had it right; there are only a few stories on this rock and those stories repeat endlessly in countless variations.

A person would have to be completely out of touch with the admonition to 'never forget' if she didn't see and hear everything that Trump has done since announcing his candidacy and not comment on how very ugly and dangerous it is to civil discourse and true democracy, which is something that happens only when people aren't escorted out of public campaign events because they are black and might have different opinions or ask hard questions.
