President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro's handshake at Nelson Mandela's memorial service was unplanned, the White House has said.
White House aide Ben Rhodes told reporters the two exchanged no words more substantive than a greeting.
The Cuban government said the gesture may show the "beginning of the end of the US aggressions".
The US broke off diplomatic ties with Cuba in 1961 as Fidel Castro aligned with the Soviet Union in the Cold War.
And on Tuesday after the handshake, a White House official said the Obama administration still had grave concerns about human rights violations in Cuba, Reuters reported.
The last US president to shake a Cuban leader's hand was President Bill Clinton, who greeted President Fidel Castro, Raul's brother and predecessor, at a 2000 UN General Assembly meeting.
Under President Obama, the US has eased restrictions on Cuban-Americans travelling to the island and on remittances between family members across the two countries.

It's a conspiracy.
Obama is looking for advice from Castro on Cuba's National Health Care system. He is hoping to implement the same plan here. Of course he won't do that until after he takes away all of our guns and declares himself MD (Muslim Dictator).

Just a hypothetical question here, would it matter if the Cuban government had encourage Oswald to kill Kennedy? Castro himself admitted they sent Cuban agents into to the US during the Cold War.

...and the CIA tried to off Castro (but failed). Further proof that communism is more effective! No wonder the Affordable Communism Act is so popular among the masses. Long live the people's struggle against ___________ (all the other isms; pick one)

Seems to me that if he can shake hands with the President of the PRC and Vladimir Putin, there isn't a real high moral bar for Presidential handshakes... so I really don't see this as a big deal...
The fact is, there hasn't been any President since FDR at least, who hasn't shaken hands with some pretty odious and distasteful autocrats. The good news is that beginning in the late 80's with the departure of Ferdinand Marcos, there have been progressively fewer of them available to shake hands with...
Hopefully this is a trend that will continue...
