I find it interesting that I, someone totally unsuited for parenthood, could easily adopt yet these men, who are not only suited to it but seem to be born to it could not until now.

This is an idiotic policy, but we'll see if it fails under the constitution. By going at it under the state constitution they have a better chance of success I'd think. Also interesting the ruling is based on the failure of the old rational basis test rather than any "gay right".

I would like to know the reasoning behind the law not allowing gay couples to adopt.
Is it based on the idea that children need both male and female parents? (and it needs to be legislated?)
Or is it because the government is afraid that gay parents will raise gay children?
Brings to mind a song...
Gay Mamas don't let your babies grow up to be straight ones,
Don't let boys play with trucks or let girls have Barbie dolls
They're better off all swishy and butchie and such...

This particular piece of legislation was passed as part Anita Bryant's "gays are trying to recruit our children" scare in the late 1970s.

My favourite gay dads.
I'll never forget being at Hatch's "little Athletics" meet. Me and her father sneaked off to have a sly ciggy* behind the bike sheds, (ah, memories of school days.) We were joined by a rather fussy looking middle age woman,
"So this is where the smokers hide!" she says. After chewing the fat with her for a minute or two, Glenn turns to us both, and states, quite innocently;
"We'd better be going back soon, our daughter is in the Javelin event."
The look on her face was priceless, she dropped her ciggy, turned on her heels and left without even so much as a "goodbye".
I damn near pissed myself.
* my god that must be a while ago, I haven't smoked in over five years.

My best friend's wife's best friends are a gay couple who've fostered for years now. I think it's up to three foster children; in the hopes they can fully adopt a child.
I should check in, see how they're doing with that.
