Bernie Sanders Recants 1972 Article on Women’s Fantasies of Rape

MUSCATINE, Iowa — Senator Bernie Sanders said a 1972 article he wrote describing women’s fantasies of rape had been misinterpreted, and its resurfacing showed how campaigns had become “soap operas.’’

“That we worry what I wrote 40 or 50 years ago, to the degree they become significant in the campaign, that’s just sad,’’ Mr. Sanders said on Friday.

In the article, written for an alternative newspaper called The Vermont Freeman, Mr. Sanders imagined male and female sexual fantasies, apparently to illustrate how both sexes have internalized gender stereotypes, which he went on to write were self-defeating. The Vermont Freeman no longer exists.

“A woman enjoys intercourse with her man — as she fantasizes being raped by 3 men simultaneously,” Mr. Sanders wrote.

In another passage, he wrote: “Do you know why the newspaper with the articles like, “Girl, 12, raped by 14 men” sell so well? To what in us are they appealing?’’

At the time, Mr. Sanders was 30 and running for Vermont governor on the antiwar Liberty Union Party ticket. He lost the race. Nine years later he was elected mayor of Burlington, Vt., as an independent. The 43-year old essay resurfaced this week in an article in Mother Jones magazine about Mr. Sanders’s formative years in Vermont’s leftist counterculture.

It is bouncing around social media, where Mr. Sanders is a favorite with the left, and it is unclear if the article will become a serious distraction to Mr. Sanders’s recently announced campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

He has been drawing large crowds to rallies in New Hampshire and in Iowa, where he calls for progressive policies like higher taxes on the rich to pay for public works jobs.

“It was a poorly written article dealing with gender stereotypes of the period, in the sense that a lot of men have the feel to be all powerful and controlling,’’ Mr. Sanders said in an interview after a town hall event in Muscatine, Iowa.

“Women have the feeling they have to be dependent. It was very poorly written in a way I certainly would not write it now. But if you read it, what you find is that is a bad situation for both people: women shouldn’t be dependent. Men should not be oppressors. We want a society where people are equal. That was about it was about.’’

They managed to dredge this 43 year old quote from Mother Jones Magazine made by a man who has absolutely no chance of threatening Hillary for the Democratic nomination...

Imagine what this bunch will throw at Jeb, or Marco, or John or Scott once they become the GOP nominee...

Politics ain't bean bag... 8-)

Highly unlikely that it was Clinton at all. Sanders is not a threat to them, which they know, and publishing this would make them look worse and hurt them more than him.

Almost certainly a Republican agent Provocateur using stink-bait; and look who swallowed it, hook line and sinker!

Sucka.

patently false, what you said, rube....

if sanders runs as a third party candidate he virtually guarantees that Hillary will lose.

I don't know...

He's got to be pretty narcissistic just to think he has a snowball's chance in hell of winning the Democratic nomination...

And from what he says, he certainly claims to believe that he does; he says he's not just running to provide some competition, but because he honestly believes he can be nominated...

I get the definite impression that he enjoys the attention, which he would continue to get as a third party candidate...

It's not like he has any great loyalty to the Democratic Party; he runs as an independent in Vermont...

ETA:

For Sanders to get the Democratic nomination would be a dream come true for the GOP; virtually the entire political center would vote Republican, Sanders would be lucky to break 40% of the popular vote and carry Vermont and the District of Columbia...(And Vermont would probably be a close call....)

Only somebody with profound ignorance of the political dynamics of this country could possibly think that any Republican would have any motive whatsoever to want to harm Sanders in his contest with Hillary...

(Which is why the person on this board who expressed that ridiculous view comes as absolutely no surprise...)

Of course my party could nominate Rand Paul and actually make it a close election...

If the two major parties nominate Bernie Sanders and Rand Paul, my candidate for President will be Martin Dempsey...He's the Chairman Of The Joint Chiefs Of Staff...

I would prefer a military coup to either of those two becoming President....

If at the end of the day our political process rendered up a choice between Sanders and Paul, it would be time to rethink this whole representative democracy thing...

It wasn't the Clintons. Mother Jones wrote a profile about Bernie and put the article front and center - likely to get it out and over with so no one could make it an issue. http://www.motherjones.com/politics/201 ... on-vermont

MJ is no fan of HRC - they wouldn't be looking to do her any favors.

Yes it does. No one thinks Bernie has a snowballs chance of anything so their only possible motive is to smear Hillary which is certain to work with the partisan stupid, like you.

Which they have done. You really are useless.
