From their website:
The National Bar Association is the nation's oldest and largest national association of predominantly African-American lawyers, judges, educators and law students. It has 84 affiliate chapters throughout the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Africa and the Caribbean. It represents a professional network of more than 65,000 lawyers, judges, educators and law students.

While I admire their mission, the National Bar Association has been pretty much a non-entity in terms of shaping public policy. I am not familiar with their president, or any of their leadership for that matter, so I have no opinion of her.

A new theory... wesw is LJ's less computer savvy alter ego. The first posts some unexplained statement - LJ follows up with the quote and link. Or is there money involved? Enquiring minds...

Exactly. I know they exist. I know nothing about them because, even in DC where there are a great many African American lawyers, they have zero presence.

Not only is that patently wrong, its rude and inflammatory. Here are the photos of the ABA Board of Governors -- hardly all white, not even all male:

you make my point for me , guin.
racially segregated clubs are what we are supposed to oppose right?

NBA is not "racially segregated." Anyone can join. They have a mission that is specific to a minority community; so what?

Absolutely--look at their website--no racial criteria required to join.
From what I understand, the NBA was formed in the 40s when the ABA excluded blacks from membership (possibly women as well, I don't know), but this changed for the ABA and the NBA has always been open to those interested in their issues. the NBA has remained to lobby for those issues of particular interest to minority lwayers--as Sue said, what's the problem?

Right. I am fairly active in the Women's Bar Association of Massachusetts - I suppose that makes me a sexist bitch. Although the smart savvy men join, and come to our events.

I guess I really believe that a post racial society is possible and desirable, silly me....

Yes, I can understand how one might get that impression...
On a couple of occasions recently, (this being one of them) wes has started threads without including the minimal information necessary to actually start a discussion on the topic he's posting about, so I have helpfully provided it...
I have thus far performed this service for him gratis, however I like the suggestion that money be involved...

thank you all...
as guin has pointed out, I am incompetent at posting stuff. failure has made me shy away from it.
...of course this could be just a clever ruse by a savvy G-man....

Careful there MGM, in Wes-World "evidence" means "whateverthehellmycurrentopinionis" without reference to any external sources.

A post-racial society is certainly desirable, but I'm not sure how possible it is, given basic human psychology.
That being said, we aren't
anywhere close to getting there at this point in history (duh - you DO watch TV, don't you?) and organizations that advocate for the rights and inclusion of minority groups in any and all professions/arena are perfectly acceptable at this point in time.
I'm ashamed to say that for all my lefty leaning, I didn't know about the National Bar Association. Now that I do, I'm joining.
Already a proud member (since first year of law school) of the National Lawyer's Guild, which was founded in part due to the ABA's exclusion of minority lawyers and was the first bar association to allow admission of minorities.
I'm a somewhat reluctant member of the ABA, but because some of my clients like seeing the certificate on my wall, I joined upon establishing my private practice.

well, I may not reference external sources but I sure use them...
and , tho I think I am fairly consistent in my views, I am capable of changing them as I learn.
I am not so afraid of losing face that I will stick with a bad position, or politician, after I learn of its faults.
how s that Hillary campaign going?
