The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 48% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance. Fifty-one percent (51%) disapprove.

The latest figures include 36% who Strongly Approve of the job Trump is doing and 44% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of -8. (see trends).

Of course Fivethirtyeight's average of polls today has Trump at 41.4% approval and 54% disapproval.

What's even more interesting is the historical comparisons shown below the current average. Of the last 12 presidents (back to Harry Truman), only Jimmy Carter is shown at a lower approval rate than Trump for this point in his presidency. And Trump has been consistently under water on the approve/disapprove ratings since the first week of February 2017 -- by 10 to 20-point margins.

Yes: and one point which I have made over and over almost since November 2016 is that the most appalling thing about this is the number of people who support someone who was already known to be an amoral incompetent scumbag. In many ways we have learned nothing new about the man since he was elected: in that sense he was, to use a term we all knew years ago, WYSIWYG. Self-aggrandizing strutters have been around since the dawn of time and we have mostly, at least in the liberal democracies, tolerated them as part of the cost of freedom and learned, for the most part, how to avoid being conned /shafted / robbed by them.

Before the election I would have guessed that maybe 10% of the poopulation (that was a typo but I quite like it: I'll leave it alone) would be foolish enough to support him. So when it was roughly half (and yes, of course I know it was slightly less but in round numbers it's one in two of the voting poopulation [it's growing on me]) I was astounded. I shouldn't have been: there were certainly a few Trump/Pence yard signs around but I was then living in a relatively liberal corner of the country (Columbia MO) and I was lulled into a false sense of security.
