I tend to agree with Sue, Hitler wanted to achieve something, Trump has nothing in mind but staying in the limelight. IMHO he has no political agenda other than that. Yes, he is a manipulator of people, but to no real end. He'd be just as happy being a communist or an anarchist if that's what it takes to make people notice him.

And while some associates indicate he is in charge, others are less fawning and don't agree. Personally, from what I have seen, I think he lacks the discipline and intellect to concentrate on anything for more than a few minutes, and certainly not enough to design an agenda or even negotiate an agreement. Whoever is pulling the strings (or steering him, if you prefer), clearly recognize(s) this and use it to push his/her/their agenda. Face it, he's shameless in his pandering to the least common denominator and isn't afraid of looking the fool, as long as he's "their fool". Most politicians are like boxers executing a strategy; he;'s more like a professional wrestler who blusters and screams and believes the whole thing is scripted for him to win (and he wins even if it isn't).

not that it means that Trump is not dangerous, even stupid people can cause a lot of trouble; and I still think someone much smarter is pulling his strings making him dangerous as well.

If nothing else, American politics is still pretty surprising.
Frequently hysterically funny...

You elect a guy who played a chimp's straight man, then you elect the chimp. Just when the world thought you may have succumbed to sanity with Obama, you go and excel yourselves again...

Next up, how long will Joe B survive, and what new horror will you impose in 2024?

I took a look at the initial postings on this thread from June 2016 when Trump first announced his candidacy.

First impression - how I miss RayThom and Lord Jim.

Second impression - how innocent we were in those days.

Echo your sentiment with regard to RayThom and LJ.
But I wonder if 'innocent' is quite the correct word — 'naive' seems to be a better fit.
“Innocence” is the trait of a person who is Innocent – when a person lacks knowledge of evil.  So usually children are innocent.  Can also mean lacking the intention and capacity to injure and do wrong.
"Naive" is when a person is very simplistic, lacking guile and experience of life — being unaware of the tricks to deceive someone.  The person doesn't know, is gullible, and would get therefore in trouble.
You can deceive a naive person, because he doesn't understand your tricks and is devoid of worldly experience, but it doesn't necessarily follow that he is innocent ... he could possibly be prone to do evil at the same time.
An innocent person, on the other hand, doesn't do harm or intend to injure others because of his good nature rather than a lack of understanding the nature of evil. He is not necessarily naive.

I was (I thought obviously) using definition 2. From Merriam Webster on line - definition 2 is bolded:
Definition of innocent (Entry 1 of 3)
1a: free from legal guilt or fault
also : LAWFUL
a wholly innocent transaction
b: free from guilt or sin especially through lack of knowledge of evil : BLAMELESS
an innocent child
c: harmless in effect or intention
… searching for a hidden motive in even the most innocent conversation.
— Leonard Wibberley
also : CANDID
gave me an innocent gaze
2a: lacking or reflecting a lack of sophistication, guile, or self-consciousness : ARTLESS, INGENUOUS
b: IGNORANT
… almost entirely innocent of Latin.
— C. L. Wrenn
also : UNAWARE
… perfectly innocent of the confusion he had created …
— B. R. Haydon

3: lacking or deprived of something
… her face innocent of cosmetics …
— Marcia Davenport
