Go Bernie!

Bernie Sanders’s Long-Shot Campaign Is Picking Up Speed
DES MOINES, Iowa—It’s the sort of problem many candidates would envy. Sen. Bernie Sanders is drawing large, ebullient crowds that are taxing an upstart presidential campaign that wasn’t expected to go very far.
The Vermont independent, a favorite of the Democratic Party’s liberal wing, is being feted by standing room-only audiences that in some cases surpass those of front-runner Hillary Clinton.
More than 3,000 came to a Sanders speech in Minneapolis in May; 700 attended his speech at Drake University here Friday night, about the same number who went to a Hillary Clinton event on Sunday that featured a buffet table and a live band. More than 3,000 people have RSVP’d for a Sanders rally in Denver on Saturday, the campaign says.
A Suffolk University poll released Tuesday showed Mrs. Clinton with a surprisingly narrow lead over Mr. Sanders—41% to 31%—in the early-voting state of New Hampshire. In May, a Bloomberg/St. Anselm College poll had found Mrs. Clinton with a 44-point lead in the state.
The Bernie boomlet is forcing the campaign to improvise. Aides have set up loudspeakers for people left outside Sanders events, and scrambled to find larger venues to accommodate unexpected crowds who relish his attacks on what he calls the “cocky billionaire class.”
Sanders rallies offer few frills and a minimal entourage. Mrs. Clinton, who as a former first lady receives Secret Service protection, traveled through Iowa over the weekend in a seven-car motorcade. Mr. Sanders drove around in a rented Chevy with a pair of aides.
At Mrs. Clinton’s Saturday rally in New York, campaign volunteers met people getting off the subway at Roosevelt Island and gave directions. At the Drake event, someone scrawled “Bernie” in chalk on a sidewalk with an arrow pointing to the right building.
A Sanders audience gets a long speech laden with statistics and policy details from a rumpled candidate whose hair looks perpetually uncombed. It goes over well.
Tyson Manker, an Iraq war veteran, said he drove six hours from his home in central Illinois to hear Mr. Sanders’s Drake speech. “The man has always spoken truth to power,” he said. “He has the backs of veterans and working people.” Invoking a phrase from then-Senator Barack Obama’s 2008 insurgent presidential bid, he said: “I’m fired up and ready to go.”
The 73-year-old Mr. Sanders is particularly popular among young voters, who say they are drawn to his grandfatherly image. Joe Thoms, a 22-year-old recent graduate of Central College in Pella, Iowa, said Mr. Sanders is his top pick for the Democratic nomination, as well as that of his friends, based on his directness and enthusiasm.
A question for the bare-bones Sanders campaign is whether it can capitalize on this enthusiasm and provide more than a rhetorical challenge to the Clinton campaign.
At one event in Iowa on Sunday, a young Sanders supporter was having a hard time figuring out how he could help. “I would love to work for the campaign,” said Levi Grenko, a 24-year-old social-media manager who lives in Centerville, Iowa. “But I don’t know how.”
Team Sanders is trying to fix that. At events, a Sanders aide has been urging people to text a certain number—a way for the campaign to provide information about events and capture details about Sanders supporters.
Jeff Weaver, the campaign manager, conceded growing pains. “We started this campaign a month ago,” he said. “This was not a situation where you had a campaign-in-waiting that was hiding inside a super PAC or a nonprofit or a think tank.”
Money has been coming in at a healthy clip, enabling the campaign to hire more staff. The campaign says its goal is to raise up to $50 million, about half what Mrs. Clinton wants to raise for the Democratic primary. By the end of the month, the Sanders campaign said it expects to have about $10 million on hand.
Some Democratic strategists predict the Sanders momentum will stall at some point. Though many on the left are excited about his attacks on wealthy corporations and billionaires, the same can’t be said of centrist and conservative Democrats who may not see him as electable, they say.
David Axelrod, a top strategist in Mr. Obama’s two presidential election victories, said: “Do I think Bernie Sanders is going to be the nominee? No, I don’t think that’s likely to happen. But do I think he’s going to get votes? Yeah, I do.”

Bernie Sanders winning the Democratic nomination would be a dream come true for the GOP, but I can't even bring myself to
dream that big....

I've set up regular contributions to his campaign and I've volunteered to host a fundraising party at my home, among other tasks for Montana for Bernie. He's apparently been stunned by the number of people showing up at his rallies, but I am not - he's the only candidate who isn't in bed with billionaires and he is also the only candidate with an untarnished record for always, always, always advocating for the regular citizens over special interests of any kind.
Given the reprehensible income inequality in the country right now and the extreme frustration with the do-nothing-good Congress, I wouldn't be entirely shocked if we saw a grassroots political revolution that brought Bernie to the presidency. Stranger things have happened . . . I think many people will be very frustrated if their only choices are another Clinton or another Bush.

I think a Bernie Saunders vs. Donald Trump presidential race would illustrate the starkness of the choices facing the American people like no other pairing possibly could.

I was going to write a postscript that said, "in which case Jim will be packing up his family and moving to a hut in deepest Amazonia."

Unless Jim's a multi-millionaire, I can't imagine what harm a Sanders presidency would do to him and his family - his kids would get a free world class university education, he and Kelly would be able to rely on a solid SS retirement in addition to whatever they have in their private retirement portfolio, etc.
The only people who have anything to fear from Bernie are the billionaires, multi-millionaires, and corporations. Yet somehow this country thrived in the 50s 60s and 70s when the taxes charged to such persons were exponentially higher . . . as they should be now.

Nothing is free, everything else requires money. Either from the user or from others. And if you think the money for that "free" education will not come from the middle class, I have a bridge I own that I am selling.

And yet European countries can make it work. Why not us?

In which European countries do 19-year-olds who can't read or do math get "free world-class university educations"?
Bernie is the "anyone but Hillary" candidate, as everyone knows. The only good thing that can come out of his candidacy (for Democrats) would be that one or two actual, viable candidates would be encouraged to come out of the woodwork. But from the other side, it looks probable that the ones who might be encouraged (e.g., VPUS) could actually be worse than HRC.

Whether it could be made to work was not the statement. If it can be made to work it will still not be free.

It will be free to the parents and family of the students which is the meaning of the term, in this case. As any honest person knows.

Even the parents of the student will pay into the system.
ETA
My so called "free" public school system takes a huge chunk of my property taxes.
Some form of higher taxes on many/most people will needed be for the "free" higher education.

Your property taxes have absolutely nothing to do with a federal "free" education program. And at the federal level, its question of priorities. Stop wasting money on stupid, useless, idiotic wars and invest in ourselves and our future. The cost of paying for post-secondary education (college or trade school), is minute compared to what we spend on "wars."

I do agree it's not "free." But its at no added cost to the families in that tuition is ZERO.
I'm totally fine with that, and I'd even pay a little bit more federal income tax if I knew the money was going to that kind of program and ONLY that kind of program. What I've paid in interest in 25+ years of paying back student loans would pay for some other kids to go to college, but that's not what my money is being used for (and it is obnoxious and ridiculous that our government profits off of our students, and lets other do the same to an even higher degree).

I'd also be willing to require some form of public service pay-back as part of the free tuition program, which could further reduce other federal spending. Set aside a certain number of entry level federal jobs across the country for recent college grads who took part in the free tuition program and pay them only a stipend, as part of the deal for free tuition. Require, as part of the federal funding of schools that each school system provide some stipend-only entry level jobs for free tuition grads, and since that reduces the systems costs, its reduces the amount of federal funding to the schools.
There are lots of possible ways to make it work out, if you're creative.

Didn't say they did. I said they go to paying for my "free" public school system (aka grades per-k to 12th grade)
I do agree it's not "free."
Thank you, that's what I was saying.
But its at no added cost to the families in that tuition is ZERO.
Unless there is some new tax on the family (and everyone) in order to pay for the "zero cost" tuition.
I'm totally fine with that, and I'd even pay a little bit more federal income tax if I knew the money was going to that kind of program and ONLY that kind of program.
I don't disagree with that and would favor some money being "repurposed" from some other part of government expenditures. But I do not trust them to do it that way.
The NY state lotto was sold to the tax payers on the promise that it would virtually eliminate the school tax portion of our property tax bill. Never really panned out as that money was promptly placed in the general budget with no reduction in the school property tax portion of our tax bills.
There are lots of possible ways to make it work out, if you're creative.
I lucked out, the company I worked for at the time paid for most of my tuition. My brother's comapny also paid for his dgree.
Sadly that perk has all but gone the way of the dodo bird. Some kind of incentive from the gov (federal tax breaks?) to companies might bring it back.

don t shoot me jim, but back when I was in 6th or 7th grade I kinda liked the soviet education model where admission was based on merit and testing (supposedly) and kids were educated as their inherent intelligence merited.
I gave up on college early, like 6th or 7th grade because I was too poor to pay for college and to young and dumb to realize that I could have achieved admission and tuition on my own without parental involvement. by the time I realized I could have done it on my own I was already on the wrong path, and did not have the pre requisite grades, tho I still tested in the 98th percentile.

state college could be "free" now if they would simply eliminate every administrative position with the word "diversity" in it, remove all majors with the word, "studies," and decline to admit students who are incapable of doing legitimate college level work.
And for most schools, abandon intercollegiate sports.
But as for the Sanders fellow and his fanciful "promises," the Federal Government has no legitimate role in (higher) education, and their involvement thus far has done nothing but make it more expensive and less relevant.
